[chirp_users] CHIRP VHF / UHF band "low / high" band limits ?
We are a state law enforcement office using CHIRP to program "QYT - KT 8900 D" units for use in our prisoner transport and patrol vehicles. Our area (Greater Pittsburgh, PA) is one of the few areas nationwide where due to congestion the "T-Band" UHF (480 - 520 Mhz) is in use. Under the "Settings - Other Setting" tabs on CHIRP the band limits are "grayed out", preset to 136 - 174 Mhz VHF and 400 - 480 Mhz UHF. How can we change the "high" (upper) band limit for UHF from 480 Mhz to 520 Mhz ?

John,
For future reference, the Baofeng Tech UV-25X2, is basically the same radio, has more features (mic gain, can sync display lines so you can see frequency and names at the same time, etc) and covers 400-520 MHz out of the box.

jim you did not answer john's question! he does not even know if it is possible to change the high limit....

I do not even know if it is possible to change the upper limit. The radio's internal filters may preclude it even if the desired frequency can be entered. And if it isn't, he can consider getting a BTech radio which can, and CHIRP will program, out-of-the-box.
Jim
Specs of the QYT 8900D has the upper band limit at 480Mhz. Suggest you follow Jim's suggestion and use the BTech radio.

I have the QYT - KT8900 (no "D" designation - this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LYIDJI3) and yes, in CHIRP under Other Settings those fields are greyed out for me. However, I was able to put in our local SAR frequency (155.415). And, I just turned my radio on and happened to have some SAR traffic. So, I can definitely receive on that frequency. I don't have any authorization to test a transmit, though.
Have you tried just programming it in and uploading it to the radio? I don't recall doing anything special to mine...oh, except for maybe doing a reset (menu #48) to start off with (be sure to get a backup image first in case I'm wrong).

Tycen,
We are talking about frequencies in the 480 to 520 MHz range which is outside the factory programmed limits of the QYT radio. CHIRP is programmed to honor the factory limits.

Well that will teach me to not jump into conversations before I've had my morning coffee. For some reason in my mind I was thinking 155 was 515. Should have caught myself when I was typing it out but...coffee. apologies for muddying the waters.

Don't feel alone. I've done the same more times that I care to admit. LOL
Jim
Does the Baofeng Tech UV-25X2 have as much voice output as the UV 5R? Thanks.
