This is pretty much my habit on Windows. I have seen too many apps that do not save the values otherwise, so that is not my problem here.../my/ problem is not knowing enough about the internal workings of the UV-5 and how CHIRP accommodates them.
WRT leaving fields or even a line in order to get the fields to update, this is not necessary in Windows. It is a matter of developer choice. I develop software for Windows and some RTOSs, and my habit is to validate fields when the focus is lost, saving, reverting to earlier content, or popping a warning box, as appropriate.
