This is what I have done. I bought a few sets of 2.5 and 3.5 mm TRS extensions, so now I can connect to anything. I found that the mainstream radios had good, repeatable quality control, but the off brands, such as BTECH and BaoFeng had a lot of manufacturing slop. Seems funny, given that the idea of "mass production" is so old.
