[chirp_users] Could use a hand with a BaoFeng and Chirp
Thanks for the ad. Have been a CHIRP user (and donar) for a while now and no issues.
Then had my desktop computer die and replaced it with a Win7 64 bit unit. Installed CHIRP and I thought everything went fine but when I tried to upload the new frequency list to the radio (a UV-5RA thats about a year old) it keeps telling me that "an error has occured. Radio did not respond"
I have used this same cable and radio in the past with CHIRP with no issues so am guessing that its the computer or OS. Have tried both 0.4.1 and "chirp daily-20150218" found on the BaoFeng site, both with the same results.
Ideas? Am volunteering in a ham event tonight and would love to have the radio as a backup for my older Kenwood "just in case"....
Thx,
Joe A KG7FDX Phoenix
Check the COM port assignments.Plug the cable into the USB port...Go to Control Panel > Device Manager...Click on Ports and see if the cable is listed and see which port is assigned.Load CHIRP and make sure the COM port matches what you found in Device Manager. If its not the same, change it in CHIRP.Hope this solves your problem. Joe, It sounds like a driver issue with the new PC. As John W mentioned, it could be selecting the wrong COM port.
Another possibility is a driver issue. You may require a backdated driver (Prolific 3.2.0.0) as described at http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_ErrorMess.php#error1 http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php
0.4.1 is approx 10 months old. The Latest Daily Build is recommended.
Hope this helps… John http://www.miklor.com

Hi Joe,
Check your driver version. Windows 7 is quite adept at keeping drivers updated, whether you want it to or not. It may have a driver that is incompatible with the chip in your cable. You may have to “downgrade” to the older driver.

This is a common problem, and likely to be yours too, is that the driver automatically installed by Windows is (intentionally) incompatible with the (unauthorized copy of a) Proliifc USB-to-Serial chip in the programming cable. This solution is to install an older driver that is compatible with the chip.

Well gents,
That fixed it! I had tried com 3 and com 1 before and no luck.
Then installed the new (old) driver that Robert and Jim mentioned and again no luck. Rebooted the computer and it works great now!
Thanks much for the help!

Whenever you change the driver and/or assign a different com port number in the Windows Device Manager, even though Device Manager shows the port as being changed, you have to unplug the programming cable from the USB port and plug it back in for the change to be effective. Power cycling the computer will work, too. ;-)
