[chirp_users] inexpensive Dual Band Mobile radios?
[This is sort of off-topic, but hinges on CHIRP support for the radio]
Howdy, I'd like to get a recommendation for a dual band mobile radio for a new ham that will (probably) not use it a whole lot. But it needs to work reliably enough, even if not a lot of features. Actually less features is fine, that is just less stuff to not understand & less to forget between uses! :-)
Mounting a UV5R in a car doesn't seem like a good idea. Can anyone offer anything good or bad about any "inexpensive" mobile dual band ham radio, including the Leixen VV-898 or Jetstream JT270M (apparently the same radio). It is one of the few cheap Mobile units I see on the list of CHIRP supported radios. http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home Amazon reviews seem fairly ok, especially for $99. I'm interested in a CHIRP-supported radio. This is intended for an 1997 Jeep Cherokee, and a small radio is probably a better match. It does need to be a dual bander.
If the cost gets anywhere even near $200, I'd just recommend the Yaesu 7900 or Yaseu 8800. But for this situation, I'm open to hearing about cheaper alternatives that I might be able to recommend until this new ham grows into the "sport".
Thanks for your helpful council.

Hi Dave!
I own about 30*40 handhelds, along with many mobiles and a base station. So with all the HTs, I've had a lot of experience in that department. If I were you, I'd probably stick with Baofeng UV-82 (2M/70CM) and UV-82X (1:25M/2M). They are about 30 and 50 bucks respectively on Amazon. The one I own is the 82X, which is here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GFAJPC8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_.... The 82 is here: http://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-UV-82-Black-Two-Way-Radio/dp/B00E4KLY34/ref=sr.... I have owned and used these little things and they are very durable, never had a single problem with one of them and I own 8:
When it comes to the biggies, Yaesu is good. Very durable and good quality. My favorite, but more expensive. Kenwood, if you drop it on the ground, you stand a good chance at sending it in and fixing it for at least a hundred bucks. I own two of the tribanders, which I love because 1.25 M is 5W, something Yaesu doesn't do.
Alinco I like because I use 1.25 M a lot, but cheaper radios. Still don't have trouble with them.
I've got a bunch of others, but these are my thoughts on these particular ones.

How about the Jeuntai JT-6188, also marketed as the Zastone KT-8900? They offer a high power of 25 watts, vs the 10 Watts of the Leixen. Unfortunately they don't seem to be Chirp supported yet, but are pretty easy to program manually. I have both the Jeuntai and the Leixen and I can tell you that the Jeuntai / Zastone radios have tighter front ends, in that they don'r recieve anywhere as many spurious, off channel signals, and I get better transmit audio quality reports. They're very compact, about same height and width as the Leixen but about 2" deeper. They also appear to be much better built with better speakers and heavier heat sink, and better microphone. All for under $100 on Amazon. I think they'd be an excellent choice for a beginner with limited space and budget.

The VV-898 can be had for $70, delivered, from eBay. It's offered at $69.99 plus about $10 postage, but with the Make an Offer option. I bought one for $69.99, delivered from the USA. I've tried to send a screen capture, twice, but the image exceeds the message size.

Hmmm. There's SOMETHING about "font size" in the '898 manual. I've not read that part. Maybe it's what you're looking to find.
See:
http://www.miklor.com/VV898/pdf/VV898_UserManual.pdf
(As an aside, a "font" actually is a specific lettering style -- or typeface -- in a particular size. Changing size is changing "font," although this is not how the word is commonly used. I used to teach computer graphics.)

Are there any low cost mobiles like this with and alpha/numeric display?

Howdy, I'd like to get a recommendation for a dual band mobile radio for a new ham that will (probably) not use it a whole lot. But it needs to work reliably enough, even if not a lot of features. Actually less features is fine, that is just less stuff to not understand & less to forget between uses! :-)
Mounting a UV5R in a car doesn't seem like a good idea. Can anyone offer anything good or bad about *any* "inexpensive" mobile dual band ham radio, including the *Leixen VV-898 or Jetstream JT270M* (apparently the same radio).

Off topic ... But I use "Mini PXT" on my iPhone and iPad to reduce the size of images I'm sending. It can create a new iMessage, or can save the reduced picture back to the camera roll (or both). Seems to work well.

I did a classic "work-around." Searching eBay for the VV-898 will show readers the $69.99 offering.

I have had very good results in dealing with the folks at http://www.radioddity.com/. They are local to me in Kansas City but they ship all over the place.

Just a heads up, there is an updated version of the Juntai radio coming out shortly. John Miklor has been beta testing and says it's worth the wait.

Can anyone offer anything good or bad about *any* "inexpensive" mobile dual band ham radio, including the *Leixen VV-898 or Jetstream JT270M* (apparently the same radio).

John LaMartina, If/when you have any news of any kind about that new version of the KT8900 and CHIRP compatibility, please let me know.
I see what might be that new radio version listed as: "WACCOM MINI-8900 136-174/400-480MHz Mobile Transceiver (SCR + Fan add version) + cable" http://www.409shop.com/409shop_product.php?id=123859 Not sure if that is the new version you're referring to. Is that the new version you mentioned?
Thanks!

Dave, for pictures of the new radio, go to the John Miklor Facebook page. There is more information, reviews and comparisons there. (UV2501) Many more features and bug fixes.
A request has been submitted for CHIRP support for the new radio, but the volunteers I'm sure are extremely busy. I have total confidence that this will be supported in the future.

I see a comment that the KT-8900 "is not" chirp compatible. Is that a current status or a forever status?
Unfortunately the current software is M$ compatible, but CHIRP will bridge that gap. Looking forward to the release if it is to be.

Nothing is forever…
As of today, the KT8900 is still in the queue, awaiting it’s turn.

The problem is that no developers has his hands on one of these.
I can do it, but need the radio on hand.
A tip: make a crowd fund campaign to buy & send me one of these to here and I will do it, if a bunch of users agree on this it's like buying me a couple of beers for each one and that's all.
Now you have, a closer solution in time.

You can by the KT8900 via Aliexpress.com since back before Christmas. The price is very nice below $100 with free shipping.

I think he meant the queue for getting Chirp support.
The lowest price I could find on the VV-898 was under $70 at amazon.com, shipped from the US. Some VV-898 ads said 25 watts while most said 10.

Leixen has both a 10W VV898 and a 25W VV898S. The VV898S is the radio used in the BackPack.
The difference in the software is the 3 power settings for the S model.

Actually the KT8900 is being worked on . It is in the same family as the UV-5001 and UV2501. I have them both. I also have a MINI-8900 (which is basically a KT-8900 with a fan). Pavel is currently helping me with the UV-5001. It has been tricky to read from and write to reliably. I already have the UV-5001 mapped out. Once we have reading and writing issue solved, I don't see it taking long to make the UV-5001 available. Then the UV-2501 and similar radios like the MINI-8900 (there are several) shouldn't be very far behind.

I have the Leixen VV-998 which is around $60 US at amazon.com, and is well-supported by CHIRP, if anyone is looking for such a radio that has current support. It's a very compact dual-band 10-watt mobile rig. I plan on putting mine through its paces in my rental car in south Florida next month.

I've got one here also. Great little units for the price. I bought one as a home whilst I saved for a more expensive unit just to get me online and now I think I'm just going to keep this :)
Thanks
