I am happy using the laptop to update the 2800 -- its working. Tweaking to get the Athlon to work is not needed from my perspective. However, I am willing to run trials if sometime you want to tweak the code for the 2800. I run Ubuntu Oneric for most of my ham stuff, but also have Windows 7/XP and Mac(Lion) machines.

Well, if there's an issue, it would be good to resolve it. I'd also like to hear from other 2800 users about whether or not they're seeing problems.

Can you run the daily chirp from the command line like this:

CHIRP_DEBUG=yes ./chirpw >debug.log 2>&1

and then send me the debug.log after trying and failing to *download* from the 2800 on the fast machine?
