[chirp_users] UV-5R
I have 3 UV-5R's
All three of them need their own *.img file because they have different firmwares.
They are all programmed with same channels and settings and all work fairly well for what I need.
However, believe it or not, one of them WILL NOT work with my J-Pole antenna. When I say 'will not work' I mean I can't hit any of the repeaters I normally use. It works perfectly, in fact really well with supplied antenna and with my dual band home made ground plane. With my MFJ power meter it also shows a full watt more output power than the other 2?
Is there anything in my programming the phone that could cause this?
Thanks,
Dennis M. Wage (W9BOQ)

Dennis - Is the J-pole suspended from a tree, or in close proximity (less than 3 ft)?
I had a similar experience where one HT wouldn’t hit one of the three nearby 2m repeaters. Lowering the J-Pole a few feet away from the supporting limb made a significant difference. Other 2m repeaters seemed unaffected. Other radios seemed unaffected. Once I found an answer, I stopped looking for other solutions, so no, not a full scientific work-up.

Actually, there is a branch of a tree that can hit the main element when the wind blows. That tree will be removed soon so I'll check it then.
The weird thing is the other two radios hit repeaters 40 miles away on the same jpole. However, the radio in question hits the same repeater 40 miles away with the crappy stock antenna, but not on the jpole.
Anyway, this is offtopic, but I thought maybe I was doing something wrong with this firmware radio with chirp.

Perhaps a bit off topic, but certainly interesting! I'd be curious if the problem goes away after the tree is removed.

Any chance the SMA 'stinger' on the j-pole (or fem receptacle, dunno which flavor BaoFeng puts on their radios) is just a bit marginal so that your j-pole will make contact with the two, but the OEM antennas work with any of the three?
Maybe try connecting the j-pole to the radio that doesn't work, dialing in an idle simplex frequency and listen for it from your other HT when they're a couple blocks or a half-mile apart?

Are you sure you are not getting into the repeater or are you just not able to hear it?
