Re: [chirp_users] Windows 11
Or...
Buy a proper "Genuine" FTDI based cable. No more problems after that.
If your supplier/seller cannot guarantee a genuine FTDI based product, look elsewhere. (Or build the cable assembly yourself.)
If you use out of date hardware and drivers, & then have to stop Windows from updating, you are leaving yourself wide open to all sorts of other possible problems.
If your PC then gets hit with something nasty, then others on the same network might be liable to getting bad stuff too. Just how much domestic trouble can you survive?
You buy cheap, you often get poor quality. End of.
(Why do some Ham's pay top$£€ etc for some rig's, then penny pinch on accessories?)

Who followed the instructions on the website, and now have the new version of Chirp happily running on a fresh install of LMDE* just fine. Many thanks to whoever put those instructions together. VERY much appreciated.
(* Linux Mint Debian Edition.)
You don't need to look else where. Buy direct from the FTDI website.

Nigel, et al, personally it gets to be insulting to me (and others, probably) when you all come back with "Get a real FTDI" chip. I've been around ham radio since I was a teen (more as a SWL) but when I bought my first cable it was, of course, a counterfeit chip and I needed to install the older Prolific driver ... I didn't find out anything about the chips and the drivers till Windows did an update and wiped out the driver loaded by the company software. I'd guess that most of the people who are asking "Why doesn't this work?" already have spent money on a cable and are only now finding that things aren't as straightforward as it should be ... if they'd bought the right cable in the fist place. It's a lot more pleasant experience to help them solve their problems rather than infer they didn't do their homework before they even knew there was a problem.

It surprises me, although it shouldn't, the number of people who ask the same question that's been asked and answered numerous times and is in the group archives, but then it's easier to be lazy and ask it again than do your own research and look to see if someone in the past has had the same question answered.

How does one (easily) search the archives for a question?
Surely, you don't expect people to download the archive files and grep them? Nor, I hope, do you expect someone to open each month's archive to see if any of the threads or subjects match the question?

I would expect people to make an effort to find out what may have already been asked & answered. Searching an archive on ones computer is much easier than it used to be when one needed to search through a library of books to find an answer.
Come on people, help yourselves to readily available resources instead of depending upon others to spend their time answering an unnecessary question (and potentially doing the research you could have done for yourself).
Your own research can give you the answer much more quickly. If you do the research and still do not find the answer then say so and no one will feel put upon. Most of us have other things to do besides answering questions that have already been answered.

At the bottom of every group email is a footer with a link to the searchable archive. Click that link, snd you'll be taken to a web page that lists all recent email messages. At the top of that page is a field to type in your search term.

How does one (easily) search the archives for a question?
Surely, you don't expect people to download the archive files and grep them? Nor, I hope, do you expect someone to open each month's archive to see if any of the threads or subjects match the question?

That wasn't called for...
The OP had a cable, it worked fine, the. His OS upgraded, and the cable didn't work.
He asked why.
His question was valid, and the fix is straight-forward, as described by myself & others.
I'm not sure why you felt the need to get up on your soap box and preach your "it's cheaper to buy quality products the first time" sermon - many, many manufacturers got 'stung' with counterfeit chips that worked fine until the vendor dropped support for them, requiring unsuspecting buyers to learn about counterfeit chips and installing older drivers.
Now the vendor has convinced MS to bundle a driver with its OS that not only refuses to operate with counterfeit chips, it also announces in the device description that they do not support the particular chip - even genuine chips - under Win 10 or Win 11.
The cable is fine, using it is fine, and "serial-chip shaming" fellow hams is not cool.
Take care,

End of.

Who followed the instructions on the website, and now have the new version of Chirp happily running on a fresh install of LMDE* just fine. Many thanks to whoever put those instructions together. VERY much appreciated.

If there is no branch under "Ports (COM & LPT)", then you don't have a compatible device driver installed. This will usually be due to one of these causes...
1. The programming cable has a WCH CH34x type USB-to-Serial chip. Windows has been known to mistakenly install the Prolific driver when this chip is present. The workaround is to download and manually install the latest driver from the chip vendor. Once you have done this, Windows will load the correct driver when the WCH chip is present.
2. The programming cable has a Prolific type USB-to-Serial chip. The PL2302HXA and recently the PL2303TA chips, which are commonly used in programming cables, are considered EOL (end of life) by the chip vendor. Support for the HXA chip was removed more than a decade ago and support for the TA chip was removed recently with v3.8.40.0. The workaround is to download, install and select the older Prolific v3.2.0.0 driver.
A link to the WCH download page and a link to the older Prolific driver and instructions for installing and selecting it are available on the miklor.com website.
