hello,
well, I just tried out the new chirp 0.4.0 on Linux. everything seems to work except for the following issues: 1. spin buttons not labeled as anything other than "spin button #" 2. check boxes not labeled as to function 3. edit boxes not labeled as to type 4. popup boxes not labeled with additional information as to what they are 5. the loaded table from the radio reads OK except that when sculling down, the cell below is read as the cell left of the one actually being looked at 6 exporting to CSV file results in an error: "settings object has no attribute.: 'pre fill'".
if this seems like a lot, it probably is. However, I really would like to be able to use a computer program to program my Bao-Fang without sighted assistance. I know this seems to be a sore point, but it does have to be dealt with at some point. If I had the time and resources to devote to learning and coding in python, I would. However, I don't. Its a simple matter of not having time (I am attending classes to get a degree here and can't add even one more thing to my plate). .
so, how about it? can you look at these?
if you need further information on non-visual interfaces in python, check here: 1. http://empowermentzone.com/NonvisualDevelopmentFAQ.htm 2. https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Accessibility/Conceptu...
Me and thousands of other blind hams who use radios supported by this program would greatly appreciate being able to do so without waiting on someone with working eyes to do it for us.
thanks,
Eric .
Best wishes, Eric!

thanks. still, its very frustrating not to be able to use the program the way others can and only on linux (then again, I can't tell what half the settings are because they aren't labeled).
I really do have to ask the developer to put himself in my shoes for a while. How can a person manipulate the features and controls in a program if they aren't labeled or are invisible? This is the consideration I ask.

Eric I feel for you in your frustration re unreadable labels. I have most of my sight but Ubuntu and Firefox use colours which blend into the background and I can only guess where and what they are. I move the mouse around until it changes shape to find items and then hope that the descriptor will come up with a definition. I doubt that this will work for you though. I have tried the high visibility colour scheme and it is less readable for me. Keep complaining and hope someone develops a solution that we can all read. Fred VA6FRM

Spread this around to as many blind hams as you know! The more voices that are heard on this, the more likely it is that the developer will pay attention. – Eric

Considering that you are required to use their software, and given the outrageous price they charge for it, you'd think they could at least spend a few more programming minutes to accommodate an additional large percentage of potential users.

funny, either I can't tell emotional content via email, or that didn't sound like sarcasm to me. Still, it is a valid point. I have run into a great barrier on paid software over the last decade or so. I pay money and have this nice "gee wiz" software package only to discover that it can't be used with JAWS. Makes it hard to justify the expense (and good luck getting the money back!).
a few notes on the Chirp package itself: 1. if there are little text descriptors, they aren't visible to the screen reader (orca in Vinux). 2 I can't even install on windows right now as the A/v package keeps getting in the way (its not an infection warning, but appears to be a popup).

Yes, that seems to be the overwhelming problem these days. I generally E quite quick and dirty with laziness. Oh well, if I had the money, I would donate. At that point, the developer would have to pay attention is I'm actually throwing money at him. In this case, this isn't happening. Eric

Eric,
I understand your frustrations with these conditions! Quick & dirty is the methodoligy of developers such as these and they really don't care whether or not you or I can use their software.

thanks. still, its very frustrating not to be able to use the program the way others can and only on linux (then again, I can't tell what half the settings are because they aren't labeled).
I really do have to ask the developer to put himself in my shoes for a while. How can a person manipulate the features and controls in a program if they aren't labeled or are invisible? This is the consideration I ask.

hello,
well, I just tried out the new chirp 0.4.0 on Linux. everything seems to work except for the following issues:
- spin buttons not labeled as anything other than "spin button #"
- check boxes not labeled as to function
- edit boxes not labeled as to type
- popup boxes not labeled with additional information as to what they are
- the loaded table from the radio reads OK except that when sculling down, the cell below is read as the cell left of the one actually being looked at
6 exporting to CSV file results in an error: "settings object has no attribute.: 'pre fill'".
if this seems like a lot, it probably is. However, I really would like to be able to use a computer program to program my Bao-Fang without sighted assistance. I know this seems to be a sore point, but it does have to be dealt with at some point. If I had the time and resources to devote to learning and coding in python, I would. However, I don't. Its a simple matter of not having time (I am attending classes to get a degree here and can't add even one more thing to my plate). .
so, how about it? can you look at these?
if you need further information on non-visual interfaces in python, check here:

Me and thousands of other blind hams who use radios supported by this program would greatly appreciate being able to do so without waiting on someone with working eyes to do it for us.
thanks,
