[chirp_users] New Install with OSX Lion
I have installed the KK7DS_Python_Runtime_R5, Chirp 0.1.12, KawaMall USBSerial cable with Prolific PL2303 drivers, and am trying to program a Yaesu FT8800R.
When I can verify that that my usbserial devices in connected through system profiler. When I connect the radio and open Chirp I select the usbserial device and start a download. The radio immediately quits with an error and Chirp reports 'An error occurred' 'ord() expected a character, but string of length 0 found'.
How can I start to debug this error?
How can I start to debug this error?
First, please try with the latest daily version to see if the problem still exists:
http://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/
Thanks!
ok, I installed the chirp-daily-10312011 and had exactly the same error. I do have a vx-7 but do not have the cable yet to test that one.

Have you used your USB-serial adapter for anything else? What device name are you putting into the clone box?
I assume you're following the "Note for Yaesu radios" bits of these procedures:
http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Beginners_Guide
Specifically about making sure the computer is waiting for the radio before hitting the button to fire off the clone from the radio side?
I have used this cable for some time and it has worked well with my windows pc setup, which I haven already gotten rid of.
A. Plug in cable to Mac and radio B. Put radio in clone mode (hold v/m and power on, select clone, push set, radio restarts in clone mode) C. Start up chirp, click ok box on debug mode D. Select radio clone E. select the select the 'usbserial' device from the list F. Select radio type yaesu/ft8800 G. Push ok in chirp, chirp is now waiting for input from radio H. Push transmit button on yaesu (v/m, radio shows transmitting)
About one second goes by then I get error on radio and error reported in chirp.

E. select the select the 'usbserial' device from the list
Can you tell me exactly which device is selected?
About one second goes by then I get error on radio and error reported in chirp.
The rest of the procedure sounds correct (thanks for the detail). It really sounds like the wrong device is being opened and CHIRP reads nothing (and fails) and the radio gets no ACK (and fails).
Can you send me the debug.log after reproducing the fail just so I can see if there's anything else there?
I have neither a Mac nor an FT-8800, although I do know that the 8800 driver is actively used and my 7800 (which is the same driver) seems to be fine.
What kind of cable is this? It's not a recent RTSystems cable is it?
The device selected is '/dev/cu.usbserial'
When I have the kawamall device plugged in this is the one shows up in the list, if I unplug the device this one is no longer available.

Okay, I'd still like to see the debug log.
Here's something you can try, to rule out issues with the cable, adapter, radio, and driver:
Find a terminal program and connect it to your /dev/cu.usbserial device, at 9600 baud. Then initiate your clone from the radio side and see if you see the model header show up in the terminal. For the FT-8800, this should be "AH018". If you see it, then we can start looking at CHIRP. If you don't then you should start looking at the above-mentioned links in the chain.
Thanks!
Perfect, I will run this on friday when I return to the qth. Thanks

ok, it must be a bad cable. I received a new kawamall cable for my vx7r and it works just fine downloading from the radio. I will now order a new cable for the 8800 and go from there!
Thanks for your work on this! Now i can stop running windows on my mac. That was the last bit of software i needed to have available on my mac.

I hate to say "glad to hear it" but at least you know what the problem seems to be.
Did you test with a terminal program just to rule out anything specific to the 8800 before you order another? I'm sure some Mac people here can offer some suggestions of quick and easy terminal programs.
Thanks for your work on this! Now i can stop running windows on my mac. That was the last bit of software i needed to have available on my mac.
Always a noble goal! :)
I was able to check it with a terminal program however the cable was for my vx7 so the header was different.
I was also able to get one of my older cables (ttl2usb) going with the ftdi drivers on the 8800 and my 897!
I do have some new prolific cables on the was with the changeable tips which should be great!
Thanks again!

Hi there, I am curious, when you get chirp to run in lion, does it come up in an x-window, or how? I'm using lion, and I'd love to get chirp working on my mac. However, I'm not able to get it going with voiceover which I need. Could you help? On Oct 31, 2011, at 4:28 PM, Craig Ludwig wrote:

Yes, it's an X11 window.

As I've said many times already, CHIRP uses GTK to achieve a cross-platform user interface. This is non-native on MacOS (and Windows) and thus "looks" like a picture instead of a set of widgets to unenlightened screen reader software. Asking it to read it to you is roughly equivalent to asking it to read a picture of a kitten.
