[chirp_users] Chirp and Baofeng radios
This is not a complaint but maybe a bug. I program radios for our SAR unit and we have some Baofeng UV5R radios. Using Chirp I programed my 4 with out any problem and saves the data. when i went to program some others they would not program no matter what i did , the popup said a bunch of stuff to include something about firmware? I think i am using the latest Version or chirp. this did this on two different computers. After trying different ways i change to the UV5 vip program and downloaded the data from a programmed radio , and uploaded to the 4 radios that would not program with chirp with out a problem? Also on Chirp I found when downloading from a programmed radio channel 0 and 2 do not always copy? both computers are using Windows 7
sounds like you have mixed versions of your radios. hence it not working on another batch.

Yes that may be , but worked fine with VIP?
I forgot to say the after trying Chirp would freeze and the only way out would be to reboot?

This is by design. You cannot upload an image that was saved from another radio unless the firmware versions exactly match.
There are several ways to transfer the channels but the best way is to download from each radio and then "import" the "master image".

I tried that too and still would not work? it works on other types of radios, like a KY8900 .

CHIRP does a full memory dump for the UV-5R style radios. The various firmware versions have different memory layouts. Overwriting the memory layout of the radio with the memory layout of another would not be a good thing so CHIRP blocks it.
It doesn't work because you must not be doing it correctly. If you can download from the radio and then immediately upload back to the radio without issues, it will work. I use my UV-5R image to program all of my other various radios so I do it all the time.
Here is a guide: https://baofengtech.com/CHIRPImport
A quick and dirty way is to just download from the radio creating a tab compatible with the radio. Then load the source image into a second tab. Then copy and past the channels from the source tab to the destination tab.

Patrick, We have over 20 radios, multiple vintages/variations of UV5R's in our group. As Jim stated, I had to download every single radio, save as v.0 under that owners name, modify the contents to what was needed, save as v.1 and upload that to the radio. Lots of files, but the only way to get all working.

I just bought two more UV-5R radios and they were quite inexpensive, like 27 dollars each. How does one know if they have the latest firmware? I am a Blind user, so looking at the display will not help. Thanks.

I have programmed many radios with an image for our local radio club/group, different firmware revisions, different models and suppliers using the same import image. For each upload, have needed to download from the target radio 1st to obtain the radio metadata (firmware revision, model info etc), then overlay channel data with the Chirp csv file imported from my master program image, then uploading the result. Works everytime for me. Just be sure to properly select model and type of radio when downloading.

There is no need to look at the display. Ever since the BFB299 firmware version was released (about 3 or 4 years ago) these radios display BFB297 as the firmware version. Since them, the "real" firmware version can only be determined by using CHIRP.

Except maybe to avoid the getting the "HN5RV01" firmware version, there has been no reason to choose one firmware version over another.

Some older versions had bugs like incorrect DTMF tones or no receive audio when the keypad beep is disabled. I don't remember what was wrong with HN5RV01.

Correct. The initial N5R style firmware from 3 years ago had the BEEP bug and missing DTMF "D" (it transmitted a "0" instead). Unless we are talking about radios from 3 years ago, there is nothing that would require anyone to be concerned about the firmware version.

I'm thinking the sub $30 radios are factory rejects or customer returns that are resold. Hard telling what version you are getting.
