[chirp_users] Another group besides dialout
I am running chirp-next the june 3rd version on ubuntu 22.04. I am a member of the dialout group. I cannot connect to my FT-65 unless I run chirp with sudo, so I have some type of permissions issue.
Is there another group I need to add myself to?
Thanks -- Robert

I'd do this.
As root (or under sudo su) install mlocate.
Then update database by this command (continuing as root).
updatedb
Then find "chirpw".
locate chirpw
Find the location, then list the file with -l so you can get the owner and group.
ls -l ./(full path to chirpw)
Then see if you're a member of the group chirp belongs to.
You're probably not (thus you cannot use the chirpw file as user) so just add yourself to that group using the root account.

David, Do you run Chirp in the CLI? I've never had luck using it in a purely CLI environment. e.g., how do you download from radio, import, and upload? Thanks.

I would do a `ls -l` on the specific serial device your FT-65 enumerates as. It might not be `dialout`, but some other group name, `uucp` maybe?
As a temporary work-around, you could try running `sudo chmod 0666 ${device}` before running `chirpw` or `chirpc` and see if that allows you to run the tool as a plain user.
If that command "fixes it", then the permanent fix is to configure `udev` to recognise it, and assign correct ownership/permissions.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
FYI, I am using chirp-next
The permissions on chirp is 755. The owner is root and the group is root. But since others is read and execute. The program runs and everything in the bin directory has the same permissions.
If I set /dev/ttyUSB0 to 0666 or 777 I still get the same error. I downloaded today's build and the same error.
The group for /dev/ttyUSB0 is set to dialout and I am a member.
Here is the strange part. I can run flrig on the same computer using an usb cable connected to my G90 for cat control and everything works fine.
Thanks

Okay, first things first… you cannot "execute" a serial port. Don't bother setting the 'x' bits.

That to me says, your permissions problem is _not_ with the serial port. There is _some other_ file that `chirp` is trying to open, can't because of permissions, and _that_ is causing your "Permission Denied" error.
The fact your ran `sudo chirpw` to launch Chirp probably suggests it created files as the `root` user. I'd try running:
find ${HOME} -user 0
and reviewing that list of files, I suspect most of these should be owned by your own user account, then fixing ownership by running:
sudo chown $( id -u ):$( id -g ) ${files}
Or to recursively change permissions in whole directories (including home directory):
sudo chown -R $( id -u ):$( id -g ) ${directories}
