[chirp_users] Macbook + Icom ID-880H + BlueMax49ers FTDI cable = frustration
I’ve seen this sort of thing posted before on the list but I haven’t noticed a fix or workaround.
I’m running OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) on a Macbook Pro. Last weekend I bought a brand new Icom ID-880H after checking to make sure that it’s supported according to the Chirp wiki. This afternoon I got a FTDI-based USB cable from BlueMax49 and figured I’d clone my radio, then upload the results back.
I was able to successfully clone the memory, so it looks like the drivers and cable are working, and I noticed that Chirp includes D-STAR information - something I’d never had call to notice before as this is my first D-STAR capable radio! Well done! Unfortunately, when I changed one tone setting and gave the channels labels, then went to upload the information back to the radio, the Chirp progress bar went all the way to the right, but then I got an error message:
“Failed to communicate with radio: Did not get clone result from radio”
That’s not the worst part, though. After Chirp errors out the radio is stuck at “CL IN”. When I shut the radio off and turn it back on again the display says CLEAR, then the ICOM banner and finally the radio is back to a factory restored state. All of the memories I programmed in over the weekend are gone. Happily, they are stored in a .img file on the Mac; unhappily, I can’t seem to get the file to load into the radio.
For what it’s worth, I get the same error when I try to upload an image with only one memory slot filled in.
Is this a known issue? Is there a workaround? What can I do to get Chirp working? I’ve been using the software for years and this is the first problem I’ve had with it. I can send a copy of the .img file if you need me to.
Thanks.
You may need to put the channels into a bank. I noticed this trouble also with the ID-880H - it does not force the channels into a bank, and it's not clear that this is required. Give that a try, and report here.
VERY HAPPY with the new IC-7100 support!!

Thanks for the suggestion, Drew. I gave it a try, but unfortunately after adding all of the channels I had set up to a bank and then giving the bank a name, I still get the same error.
I went so far as to install Virtualbox on my Mac so I could try running Chirp in Linux. Once again I was able to clone the contents of the radio, such as they currently are, but trying to upload the modified img file with the bank information results in a slightly different error. Now Chirp acts like it completes the upload, but the status bar on the radio goes all the way to the right and then displays CL ERR, forcing a reset of the radio.
I still have a Linux laptop I haven’t yet tried. I don’t have access to a Windows installation, though.
Is there a good diagnostic tool I can install to see what the serial port is doing?
Thanks again for the suggestion.
I have and ID880h and a mac. However I used a cable I made myself. I had no trouble when communicating between the PC and the id880, but had a similar problem from the mac. so I can agree with a potential issue with the id880 on a mac when the same image and cable work on a PC. I have not yet dug into the problem. Sorry.

Well, I dug out my Linux laptop, plugged in the cable, fired up Chirp, and wonder of wonders, the ‘880H both cloned perfectly and read in the file I created the other day with all my frequencies in it. So it looks like I’m in business.
While it’d be nice to know what it is about the Mac that keeps uploading to the radio from working, I’m happy I got it to work at all. <grin> Now on to seeing if I can get D-STAR figured out.
Cheers/73, Creede WA7KPK
Good to hear that its isolated to mac book. I think I had no trouble on the raspberry pi also. I will need to see if I can figure it out one day!
