[chirp_users] Mac Problems
I admit I'm fishing around here a little but maybe someone can help.
I'm helping someone else (remotely) troubleshoot their CHIRP installation. He says that the binary (unzipped, daily build) won't open on his Macbook.
I've mentioned the Error logging window that may be holding things up and he's going to check for that, but is there anything else I should suggest?
Thanks, Lisa KD2FFJ

The binary is for Windows. He needs the .app for OS X.

He's got the .app.zip file. The icon comes up right when it's unzipped for the app.

If this is the first time running chirp on mac, did he install the special python runtime package first? http://www.d-rats.com/download/OSX_Runtime/KK7DS_Python_Runtime_R10.pkg
that is footnote 3 on http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Download

The app runs right where it is unzipped. It's not in an installed package that mounts when you double click on it. Are you saying you cannot get the app file out of the zip file? Or that the app fill just won't run when clicked on? First off Chirp won't run on Mac unless it's an Intel chipset and processor based. Second you need to install the Python support libraries. They are at the same site where you downloaded the app. Third you need to install a driver for the USB cord. Either the Prolific 2032 or the FTDI driver. I think both are also on the same site as the app.zip file. And I know the Prolific is an an installer format. Probably so for the FTDI chip cord. So if you get all these players together properly it will work.

Hi Lisa, Helping people remotely can be so difficult! They do things you never expect, describe things in unexpected ways, and what you say & what they thought you said can be so different.
Get yourself a free copy of TeamViewer. It runs on Mac, Linux, Windows & mobile. Click the big green button & install on your own machine. http://www.teamviewer.com/
Tell the person you're helping to download the TeamViewer "Quick Support". It is also a free download from the TV website, but it is the link UNDER the big green button. The link says says: "Join Remote Control Session".
TV QS only runs when double-clicked, and will not leave any TSRs or daemons running when you are finished with it. Very clean. Follow the basic instructions, meaning that you both launch your TeamViewer apps. They need to tell you their ID number & password so you can connect to them.
It's MUCH easier to help when you can actually see the screen & even control the mouse & keyboard. Give it a try & I bet you get a lot more done, better & more quickly.

I've used CoRD on my Mac to run an RDP client on Windows. Small footprint and I think it can even shadow a session. I won't call Dave names, obviously he has used TeamViewer before. It may be as safe as mom's apple pie. Now is it your point that someone is "insane' for installing an RDP client on Mac? I would disagree completely. I've used them to shadow client sessions to determine if it was a case of operator error since the late 1990s. So show the man some respect. If you use Chirp he's one of several software engineers that make it possible for you to use it free of charge and have a valid opinion of what it lacks, or be heard about bugs you discover.

Denis, Please enlighten us about why running teamviewer is insane? I would have suggested logmein (for remote administration), which I used to love up until a few days ago when they pulled the plug on the free party.
