Just a follow-up to my previous message on the above.

Today's upgrade to 20160128~wily~1, as offered through Ubuntu's Software Updater, was installed as expected and the correct version (CHIRP daily-20160128) was displayed in the About CHIRP pane.

It seems that the exercise of searching the computer for any remaining Chirp files and deleting them before re-installing the latest version (via the Synaptic Package Manager) did the trick.
