Without seeing a debug.log file, the most likely causes would be...
- there isn't a working connection between the 2-pin plug and the socket of the radio. - the wrong model is being selected
Double check to make sure the plug is fully inserted. Also make sure you are selecting '5RM' as the model.

The radio is tri-band, tri-power, 999 channels - I'm not aware of any similar spec Baofeng that might be a substitute/alias, maybe reach out to Miklor and ask how they programmed the radio via CHIRP...

Some articles say the model is sometimes mis-labeled as UV-5RM, not the proper 5RM. What model did you select from CHIRP? I assume 5RM, but you didn't mention.

I selected 5RM' also downloaded the programming software from Baofeng. when trying to use I get the little icon on the radio but then a bit later I get "failure" on the software so I know the radio is talking to the radio. Tom WD0GVH

I had exactly the same problem and was told to look at the how the programming plug fits into the radio. If the plug binds on the case, it is not seating properly, which is just what happened with me. If you get a couple of short patch cables ( female to male ) that will plug into the sockets in the radio and connect to the plug, you will likely have a lot more success.

Which confirms that this is a connection problem. No software will work until you provide a working connection between the radio and computer.

I've also had issues with the two-pin plug seating firmly. Different Baofeng, and I don't remember the exact errors, but it was fixed when I REALLY seated the plug in there. It took a surprising amount of effort to get the final click, but once I did that, I had no further issues, everything communicated happily and reliably.
