[chirp_users] copying from BF 3TP to BF GT-5TP
I hate to bother the group with this, but here we go. I have 2 Bao Feng GT-3TP units, no problem using CHIRP to transfer between them using the latest daily build and the recommended configurations from the home CHIRP page. Editing works fine and changes transfer properly.
But when I try to do exactly the same from the 3-TP to the 5-TP the cloning fails because I cannot open the panel giving access to the UV 82 HP configuration that is required. I can download from the radio just fine, and upload to the radio, so the program cloning is talking to the GT-5TP. When I go to 'file' and get the file I want to put in the GT-5TP, the system will not give me access to the proper configuration for that radio because somehow it has lost the configuration inherited from down loading and uploading.
I tried using the 'export csv' option, with the same result.
Sorry to be simple but I'm stumped.

You cannot do that.
Plug in the radio, download from the radio. Save the image file in case something breaks.
Same thing with a different radio, give the file a different name, like John Smith's BF3TP. Save that file. Never assume same model radios are 100% comparable. NEVER!
Export the frequency list you want to copy as a spreadsheet csv file. Say it's the BF3TP, export as CSV.
Use LibreOffice to open it up in LibreOffice Calc. Microsoft Office will NOT work.
Read up on how to transfer frequencies from one model to another, it's done via the csv spreadsheets. Consider ALL img files to be incompatable. I don't have the instructions in front of me, but I needed to tell you you cannot directly do what you are saying, you have to use CSV files and LibreOffice Calc.

True. Microsoft Excel will corrupt some of your fields.
you have to use CSV files and LibreOffice Calc.
No you don't. Open images of both radios into two different Chirp tabs and cut/copy/paste between the tabs. You don't have to use csv files/spreadsheets for anything OTHER THAN to print a copy of your channel designations if you need a printed copy.

Thanks, Nigel. I just wanted to make sure he didn't try uploading the wrong img file.
Of course, you're right. I've done it a zillion times, but I'm not home.

Ho Hugh,
Try using Copy & Paste in Chirp itself, without bothering to export to a spreadsheet.
Download a fresh copy of the GT3 config from the radio. Copy (as in cmd-C) the config lines from the GT3. Change radios. Then get a fresh download from the GT5 (The GT5 download should create a new tab in Chirp) Paste (cmd-V) the lines you want to ‘clone’ from the GT3 config onto the GT5 config page, ove-writing lines as needed. Just highlight the starting line where you want the lines from the GT3 to start). The upload the modified config back into the GT5.
It doesn’t hurt to save the original GT5 config that was just downloaded just in case you don’t get a satisfactory result and wish to restore.

The best way to do this does not require messing with CSV file. What you do is download from the source radio and save the tab to a CHIRP Radio Images (*.img) file. Then you download from the target radio. If you haven't already, save a copy of the target radio to a CHIRP Radio Images file as a backup. Then Import the CHIRP Radio Images file into the tab for the target radio. Make any other settings changes and upload to your radio.
This page explains how to do it between ad UV-5R and a UV-82. https://baofengtech.com/CHIRPImport

I did not know you could import an image file. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The best way to do this does not require messing with CSV file. I would not recommend writing a different radio's img file to another one. While it can work, it can also be catastrophic.
I use copy and paste within chirp to move data between many different radios and it seems to work fine. Kenwood to Baofeng, Baofeng to Kenwood, Kenwood to Yaesu, Baofeng to Btech, etc
