[chirp_users] Yaesu FT-90 cable question
Hello, I've come into possession of a Yaesu FT-90r dual-band 'micro' mobile radio, and I'd like to program it with my computer. I see several people offering cables for prices varying from $20-30, and I wondered if anyone here has advice on which cable to get/use?
I like Blue Max 49ers ( https://bluemax49ers.com/product-explorer/yaesu-ft-90-ftdi-ct-29c-6-ft-radio... ), and their cable is right at about the mid-point of the price range ($26.95 w/ free shipping), but I thought I'd ask here first.
I see current CHIRP claims to support it, can anyone personally confirm it does?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer,
Ken, N2VIP
Absent any first-hand experience, I think I'll try manual programming for local repeaters, and if that gets too tedious, I'll just order the BlueMax49ers cable.
I might be able to save a few bucks by buying a cheaper cable, but I'd rather pay a bit extra to get a good quality cable the first time... (the radio did come Rwith an RT-Systems cable from 20+ years ago, but it wants a 9 pin serial connection...)
Thanks for the responses,
Ken, N2VIP

I don't have first-hand experience, but I can offer second-hand experience recently. When converting the ft90 driver for chirp-next, I was working with a guy and we did get it working, so I think it's fine. It's not a popular (or common) radio and the driver doesn't support more than basic memory editing, but did seem to work.
That said, I would encourage you to not cheap out on a cable (which you seem to realize is smart) on this one, even more so than normal. The ft90 is a weird arrangement where it requires power from the computer on one of the signal lines to work properly. Most radios only use a two or three-wire connection for the data lines, but this requires one of the hardware signaling lines. So, BlueMax49ers is the way to go, IMHO.

I use the RT systems controller and cable. Mine uses a usb port and it works well. Sometimes you have to hold the cable where it hooks into the computer to keep a tight connection. I use Chirp on Baofeng radios and it also works well if you get the legitimate cable. The Baofeng/Kenwood cable are different than the Yaesu cable.
