[chirp_users] FT-60 cable question
Hi Dan,
When I talked to you at Seaside, OR you said to drop you a line and you could tell me what cable to purchase to work on CHIRP, thanks
John Barker
When I talked to you at Seaside, OR you said to drop you a line and you could tell me what cable to purchase to work on CHIRP, thanks
Actually, what I said about the FT-60 was that I'm not sure which cable is best for that one because they all seem problematic. The problem seems to be that the jack on that radio is machined slightly differently from a regular 3.5mm one for some reason, and when I was writing the driver for it, I had to keep pressure on one side of it so it would make contact.
Since Yaesu doesn't provide a cable for it (remember, it's clone-able, but not PC-programmable, according to them), I'm not sure what cable to recommend.
I don't own one myself, but a lot of people here do. I'm sure we can get some good usage reports from the folks here that have one to recommend (or not).
If there is a clear suggestion, then we should add it to the CableGuide page on the chirp site.

Dan, I appreciate you getting back to me. I'm brand new to ham radios. When I try to connect to CHIRP I cannot get my FT-60R to go into the clone screen it just shows a numeric frequency. What am I doing wrong? Thanks John

I have had good luck with this cable set. I have programmed a Yeasu FT-60, several Baofeng models, a Kenwood TH-F6 and a Wouxon UV8D with this cable using Chirp. http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-in-1-USB-Programming-Cable-for-Baofeng-UV5R-A-Plus...

Eldon,
Thanks for your help I really appreciate it. I'm brand new to ham radios. I was trying to connect my FT 60R to Chirp and I cannot get to the "clone screen" as shown on the instructions from the web site, it only shows a radio frequency. Any ideas? Thanks again

John,
I followed the instructions listed on the popup box just before you read your radio (which has to occur first). The instructions are: 1. Turn radio off. 2. Connect cable to MIC/SP jack. 3. Press and hold in the [MONI] switch while turning the radio on. 4. Rotate the DIAL job to select "F8 CLONE". 5. Press the [F/W] key momentarily. 6. After clicking OK, press the [PTT] switch to send image. There are instructions listed before you clone your radio too.
These worked well for me.

Those instructions come from Yaesu manual so they must work ;););)
I have the very same cable set you have spotted and used it with many different radio models including FT-60 and can confirm it works. Only problem I can see I suppose it has the prolific-clone chip inside so you have to pay attention to drivers, under linux just works.

Hi Eldon,
My problem is that on step 4 I cannot get to "F8 CLONE" it just goes to a normal radio frequency. Could this be that I do not have a good cable that is recognizing it is in a clone application. I had another friend clone his frequencies on to my phone and that worked good. Do you think it might be my cable or something else, thanks

On yaesus at least, getting into clone mode should have nothing to do with the cable, and all about the procedure/technique. John, I just tried these instructions without the cable attached. They work!
The [MONI] switch is the centre switch on the left side of the radio. It has the the dimple in its centre. If you are pressing this switch when you turn your radio on it should go into the menu mode and allow you to select option 8 with the channel selector knob.
If this doesn't work then you may have a problem with your radio.

Hi Eldon,
My problem is that on step 4 I cannot get to "F8 CLONE" it just goes to a normal radio frequency. Could this be that I do not have a good cable that is recognizing it is in a clone application. I had another friend clone his frequencies on to my phone and that worked good. Do you think it might be my cable or something else, thanks

John,
I followed the instructions listed on the popup box just before you read your radio (which has to occur first). The instructions are:
- Turn radio off.
- Connect cable to MIC/SP jack.
- Press and hold in the [MONI] switch while turning the radio on.
- Rotate the DIAL job to select "F8 CLONE".
- Press the [F/W] key momentarily.
- After clicking OK, press the [PTT] switch to send image.
There are instructions listed before you clone your radio too.
These worked well for me.

Eldon, Thanks for your help I really appreciate it. I’m brand new to ham radios. I was trying to connect my FT 60R to Chirp and I cannot get to the “clone screen” as shown on the instructions from the web site, it only shows a radio frequency. Any ideas? --Dan _______________________________________________ chirp_users mailing list chirp_users@intrepid.danplanet.com <mailto:chirp_users@intrepid.danplanet.com> http://intrepid.danplanet.com/mailman/listinfo/chirp_users -- "The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground." --Thomas Jefferson, letter to E. John,
I used CHIRP successfully on my FT-60R with a cable I got at Valley Enterprises, one of the vendors listed in the Chirp FAQ
