[chirp_users] Kenwood Image
Hi Folks, I looked on the Chirp repository for an image for my Kenwood TH-F6A and didn't find that model. Does anyone have a stock image you can send my way? My radio does not import, but it opens my CSV files, but those don't upload or save live to the radio. I don't know if another stock image will get absorbed into it either, but I'm just trying different things. Thanks.

The Kenwood TH-F6A is programmed in "live mode". There are no CHIRP Radio Images (*.img) files associated with radios programmed using "live mode".
Are you just using a plain old CSV file or are you using a known to be CHIRP compatible CSV file? I dug out my Kenwood TH-F6a and was able to Import channels from an old CHIRP CSV file from long ago and had no issues. You can't just throw just any CSV at CHIRP and expect it to work.

Actually, I used a Chirp CSV that I programmed into it a year or so back. I just added some channels. But it won't even do an import, so at that point, it hasn't seen the file. How did you add the channels? I would expect that you used a text editor or a spreadsheet program and "broke" the CHIRP compatibility. Can you load the CSV file into CHIRP itself? Do you have a copy of the CSV before you added the additional channels to see if that works?.
I have attached a valid CHIRP CSV file with 6 simplex channels. Try it.

Thanks Jim, Actually, after turning off the radio again, and reconnecting, it now connected with both Chirp and the Kenwood software. It must have been the PC setting in menu #9. I changed a few settings with the Kenwood software and wrote that to the radio. Now I'm working with Chirp, and if I can't get my CSV file to work, I'll try yours. Jim, I imported my CSV with no errors and it shows the files in Chirp, but I try to save or save as, and it does not save, is this normal?

No. That is not normal. I am able to edit the Generic CSV tab and either Save or Save As here.
Jim
Jim and All, I see now that there is a message on the import that tells me to use export. That is one of the problems with using Chirp in windows with a screenreader. Information pops up, and if you don't route the reading cursor to the PC cursor and read around on the screen, you aren't privy to messages given. So I exported it this time. But although they show in Chirp, they don't seem to be working on my radio. And it would seem that only around 90 channels imported out of 300, based on when the dial passes zero. At least I'm making some progress.

Jim, Your file worked, I imported your file and tested channel 1 146.43 I use Liber office to import lines from other chirp files. So all the lines worked in other radios I programmed with Chirp. Granted, some of the channels are out of range of this radio's transmit abilities, but I have imported HF frequencies before, for listening, and they imported okay. And Chirp is not giving me any errors when I import the file with 300 channels. When we do the import, I have always selected "All" and then okay. Is that right? Assuming that they are already numbered the way you want them, then that is probably the right thing to do for your needs. But I routinely unselect channels that I don't need and then remap the From / To numbers to import them into an empty are of memory rows so that the new channels don't overwrite my existing channels.
Jim
Well I always try to keep them numbered correctly, and hopefully they don't get messed up along the way. I'm sure I have a couple duplicates in there, but that's okay with me. But Chirp keeps "not responding" during my imports, I don't know if it is over-loaded with 300 channels or what. It's odd, every time I import my CSV file, it leaves out channels 0 through 3, and 11 through 24. 0 is NOAA, and 1 through 3 are MURS channels, and 11 through are FRS channels. Is it normal to leave these out?

No. This is not normal. Like I have been saying, you probably have a bad CSV file. Send it to me and I can either fix it, tell you what is wrong with it or both.
Jim
Hi Jim, Thanks for looking it over for me. I have four banks of 11 meter at the end part for RX, and they get loaded up okay. Due to the poor access with a screenreader, I can't really do anything with the settings in Chirp, but when I downloaded from the radio into the Kenwood software, I can affect all the settings, and I checked the 10 memories, like they were 10 different banks of memory, I guessed, I don't know why they have that there. The reason that CHIRP can't send channels 1-3 and 11-24 to the Kenwood TH-F6a is because this radio does not support NFM (narrow FM). Edit these channels so that the Modi is FM and they would then be compatible with the radio and upload as the others do.
Jim KC9HI
Thanks Jim.

I read on-line that it has to be in PC mode. I used an app on my iPhone called: Be My Eyes where a sighted person reads something with the phone's camera, for the Blind person. and I went into menu #9, and PC mode wasn't flashing, I think there was 3 choices, TNC, PC, or speaker Mic. So I selected PC and I am still getting an error with the Kenwood software, I installed that to make sure it was communicating with the radio, since with Chirp, it will only download, but nothing downloads, just no errors in Chirp. Is PC mode the right option for the Kenwood TH-F6A? Thanks.

The only trouble with the Be My Eyes app for the Blind, is that usually we connect to people who are non-technical, and it is difficult for them to know what you are trying to accomplish when it comes to radios and computers. If someone with a similar Kenwood would be interested in assisting me with setting the Kenwood menus right, you could face time with me, it would be much appreciated. There isn't an image for any radios that program in live mode.
