[chirp_users] Chirp LiveCD update
I am currently uploading a new version of the Chirp LiveCD. It should be available for download by 1900GMT. http://sourceforge.net/projects/chirplivecd I've added a few new features to make the CD even more useful. First is an updater for Chirp. You will see an orange icon on the desktop titled Chirp Updater. Double click it and follow the on screen instructions to update Chirp to the latest release. Please note that if you are running from a CD, the changes will NOT be retained. When you reboot the computer, you will be back to the old version of Chirp. If you plan to use the liveCD more than a time or two, I recommend you make a bootable USB drive (LiveUSB). Instructions are located in the project's wiki. The LiveUSB will retain the updated Chirp and any files you save.
For the Chirp developers out there, mercurial is included in this release.
For digital mode users, Fldigi is included in this release.
Note to all, I will be unable to push out another release until February.

I found it.
Why is it that, 10 seconds after you send a stupid question, you find the answer right in front of you?

I'm not familiar with all of this, where is the wiki located?

I've already created a cd which works perfectly and today I thought I'd try creating a bootable USB stick. It all went well as per the wiki instructions but I came to a grinding halt when I discovered that my PC (Windows 7 Pro 32 bit) has no option to boot from a USB port. It only has the C: drive, the Floppy drive (does anyone use them any more?) and the CD/DVD drive. I can't see anywhere to add the USB to the available options, or any way to change the Floppy drive option to USB. Any suggestions?

You need to figure out how to get into the BIOS of your PC and change the boot order. You may have to enable USB boot. If you have a Dell PC hit F12 for a custom boot menu during startup (before windows starts) or F2 to get into the BIOS and dig around in there. Check your PC user guide (probably downloadable) for BIOS configuration information.

I can get into the BIOS, and I can change the boot order, but USB is not included in the available boot devices ...
My PC is not a manufactured one, its a built one so there's no user guide. I guess I can search for the BIOS on good old Google and see what I can find.

Plug the USB flash drive in before boot up and entering the BIOS. The flash drive may show up as a USB hard disk drive. Jim KC9HI

Yep I'd tried plugging the USB in first but still its a no show. It lists my 3 hard drives plus something called SMI as a 4th hard drive - don't know what that is, and under External drives its lists the Floppy, then Generic SD/MMC - which I'm assuming is a memory card, then Generic Compact, then Generic SM/xD-Pic. I don't know what they are either.
Is it possible to create a bootable SD card?
My BIOS is an American Megatrends. It shows the date as 2005 as its loading, but in the BIOS edit screens it shows 2002 so it might be too old to include USB's.

Ken,
Open the case of the computer and get the model number of the motherboard and see if you can download a manual for it. What you are trying to do should not be difficult. What you mentioned about the age of the BIOS may have something to do with it and digging a little deeper may help you resolve it.
Thanks Tim. I’ve probably spent enough time on this already, and its really not that important. I already have the CD version that works and I was just trying the USB for fun really. The USB is more convenient than a CD and I thought being able to boot into Linux could be a handy option at some point, but I will survive without it.
(I know at some time I won’t be able to resist doing what you suggest !)

I understand. I have one laptop (Acer Aspire One) that simply refuses to boot from the CHIRP USB. My other machines work fine with it. The AA One boots fine from my LPS and Puppy USB drives.

Ken,
Most new computers have the ability to boot from usb. If you purchased the computer with Windows7 pre-installed, it is certainly new enough. In some cases, the USB option will not appear in the bios unless a usb drive is plugged in. You may try that. Also, most computers have a one-time boot option button. For Dell, press the F12 key when you see the Dell splash screen. For some HP computers, press ESC at the HP splash. Turn your computer on and look quickly at the splash screen, it should tell you, or use your favorite search engine to look for "boot from usb on <computer model>".

every time you want to boot from a USB you have to go into the BIOS and you probably won't be able to make that permanent. on my PC you have to do that every boot. http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ is a great resource.
