[chirp_users] BF 888s and UV5R
About 6 weeks ago, i purchased the 2 radios listed in the subject line to test them out for work. I programmed them both to the frequencies assigned to our license. We were assigned a corporate license recently, with different frequencies, vs our stand alone site license which is going to expire. Using the same computer, same "fake prolific" Baofeng cloning cable and the updated daily CHIRP software i was able to reprogram the UV5R, but when i went to read the BD888S i received the error message "radio refused to enter programming mode". Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
may be silly question, but did you change radio type to the bf 888? easy common thing to do lol....

ok. just a thought lol.
have you got the latest version of chirp?
have you tried slecting each radio type and do a read attempt.
its the plug sitting home in the radio as some varients the plug dont go all the way in, give it a squeeze while trying to read.
I have a gt-3tp mk3 and until the later update last month, it was only programmable using the uv-5r menu. due to the firmware version in the radio.
cant be anything wrong with the lead/usb/windows, as its working on the other radio.

Updated chirp this morning. Tried everything listed under Baofeng. Ensured plug is seated properly and also tried holding in place tightly while attempting to read. It read and programmed perfectly 6 weeks ago after i rolled back the driver on the cable for the fake chipset. Cable and software worked perfect for uv5r.....

I would try it again with the UV 5R and if it still works on that, then you can eliminate the possibility of the cable. Glenn ----- Original Message ----- From: Nate Alvin To: Discussion of CHIRP Sent: Monday, May 01, 2017 2:31 PM Subject: Re: [chirp_users] BF 888s and UV5R

Did you change the device driver? There seems to be a change that has taken place in the recent BF-888s radios. It has been reported that several radios are purchased in a batch, some program and some do not. One radio that did not program was sent to me for testing. Unfortunately it programmed fine here (programming cable containing a counterfeit Prolific chip and Windows 7 64-bit with older Prolific v3.2.0.0 device driver). So the recommended older driver works. The person that sent me the radio, Mark, solved his problem by purchasing a programming cable with an FTDI chip.
Jim
Hi Jim,
Yes i did roll the driver back. Not sure whats up, but i decided to try the baofeng software that came with my cable. I just finished up reading the radio and writing the new freqs/tones to it....tried chirp one last time and i still get an error message....

Hi,
The simple answer is: Try again. Maybe a few times.
I don't know why, but sometimes the BF-888S radios don't like to enter programming mode every time. I think this problem affects Windows more than Linux. I've only used CHIRP on Linux.
You are correct that if you can program a UV-5R then you know the cable works. Both the UV-5R and the BF-888S use the same cable and 9600 baud. Even just reading data from the radio requires the computer to transmit serial data to the radio and receive data back from it which proves that all three wires are working.
It doesn't matter which channel the radio is set to. I have just tried all 16 channels and it works on every one of them.
What I did find is that every time you read from the radio, it reboots. Data transfer doesn't work during boot-up, which seems to take around 6 seconds. Because the serial cable is plugged in it is muting the speaker so you can't hear it saying "Power on...".
And before anyone suggests another bit of common superstition, no it doesn't matter what you have the volume level set to.
It is of course possible that they have changed the way the radio works (although for something that cheap and simple, I doubt it), or that the one radio you have has a physical problem with one or both of the connectors.
Tried 25+ times. The baofeng software works so thats what i will use

I bought a set of the 888s that I could not use chirp with too, I just got an Amazon refund and ordered another set which worked, as I recall the ones with a particular color sticker in the battery compartment was the ones that don't work, sorry it's kind of vague recollection

Hi Don, i think in the end its just the 888 being crabby. They worked with chirp 6 weeks ago, now they dont. Same cord, same driver, same computer. I got them reprogrammed with the oem software so i will just use that for the 888 and chirp for the others. Thanks
