Re: [chirp_users] Version of Baofeng UV-5R not supported by CHIRP?
I read something about there being diffrent versions which require separate programming software. I think it was on the Baeofeng USA website.

Chirp will not work with BFB291. Go here and get software http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/UV5R-Software.html

I was able to successfully use the latest daily build on both my 251, and 291 versions of UV-5R. What you cannot do, is load one radio, then go to the other radio, and load it. When you go to the other version, you need to download from the radio, the open the file with all your saved info, and upload it to the new radio. In other words, download from the radio, even if you do not intend to use the file, that seems to be what tells chirp what version radio you have.

...across versions of the UV-5R, correct. That's because they decided to change their memory layout for the later versions of the firmware.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here, but CHIRP doesn't store any information about what radios (or versions) you have.
I was referring to the file that you can save with all the information for each channel. I have both my UV-5R's loaded the same. But I could not make the file, load it to one, then switch radios, and load it to the other. I had to download the info from the new radio, before I could get it to load the new channel file to the radio.

Right, that's because they have incompatible firmware versions. What you describe is sane and doable for every other radio except the UV-5R. Effectively you have two different radio models, even though they both say "UV-5R" on the front.
Luckily, CHIRP provides you a couple options for merging the actual memory contents from one type to the other :)
