[chirp_users] Using chirp with ubuntu 22.04
Hey everyone, I am new to this list, so first off hello. I am trying to get chirp running on my system. I am running Ubuntu 22.04, with all packages current. Chirp is installed via apt, as using snap or flat pack renders it inaccessible with Orca.
The problem, when I download from my Baofeng Uv5r, I get an error that says module ‘collections’ has no attribute callable. Is anyone running Chirp successfully on Ubuntu 22.04? I know that Python 2 is no longer supported. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much in advance,

Don't install Chirp from the repositories. It's too old.
Go to https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/ and download and install the flatpak version. You might have to first "sudo apt install flatpak" if you don't already have it.

Nigel,
Is CHIRP from the repository accessible?
CHIRP installed with Flatpak is inaccessible because Flatpak is inaccessible.
Certainly for blind users, an old version of CHIRP is much better than the inaccessible flatpak version.
However there is a source tarball here:
https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/chirp-daily-20220602.tar...
I'll help any blind person install the CHIRP source tar ball.
Nigel, that should be accessible, right?

If python-gtk2 is installed on their linux system, then anyone can build and install chirp from the source code, namely

For qt dependencies requirements for flatpak, it depends up how you installed flatpak.
Since your system doesn't even have the command tail - which part of the core utilities - anything is possible.
How many different chirp installs are there on the system?

I got the same thing on my Ubuntu 22.04 machine. sudo apt list
apt list | grep python-gtk2 gave the warning about apt not having a stable cli interface. The apt install command gave E: Unable to locate package python-gtk2.
In case interested, the python 3 version of Chirp that I cloned from git was https://github.com%E2%80%BA mpoletiek › py3-CHIRP. This is the version that gave me the most milage. Thanks to everyone for your help, advice and suggestions thus far. I have to do that thing called work in a few hours, so off to bed. Have a great night. https://github.com/mpoletiek/py3-CHIRP

Certainly for blind users, an old version of CHIRP is much better than the inaccessible flatpak version.

You can ignore the first message.
If you're planning on writing scripts using apt then you should you use aptitude instead.
Try running
apt update
but if I doubt it will change anything, i.e, it appears you need to use flatpak.
And you don't have to install anything in the update.

Nigel,
This was posted to this list:
The short version is, the at-spi bus is not available in the flatpak sandbox. I know there was an issue raised back in 2016, to try and get this resolved. The web url for this github issue is, https://github.com/flatpak/flatpak/issues/79. I really hope we can get something resolved with this technology, because I know more and more programs are using it, besides Chirp.
So until the at-spi bus is available in the flatpak sandbox it will not be accessible.
Is there a date on when CHIRP will be written in the latest version of a python so that it can again be available in the repositories and NOT conflict with the distributions newer python?
Best wishes, David

I tried to install it that way, and no part of the window was accessible. It does read, if I install it using apt. I am totally blind, so I definitely need it to work with the orca screen reader. JAWS Certified, 2021, https://www.freedomscientific.com/Training/Certification

I am happy to report that I have made progress. I got Chirp running with python 3 support by cloning this git repository: https://github.com/mpoletiek/py3-CHIRP
I am able to navigate the menu bar, and download an image from my radio. My next question is, how do I make Orca announce what is in the memory? It will say memories page tab, but then is silent, no matter what I press. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Guy

I tried to install it that way, and no part of the window was accessible. It does read, if I install it using apt. I am totally blind, so I definitely need it to work with the orca screen reader. JAWS Certified, 2021, https://www.freedomscientific.com/Training/Certification

Hi Guy, I typically tab once and you will be off the memories tab and you can arrow around like any spread sheet. Note, editing with Orca, I haven't found easy, so I export it to a CSV file and fix it up in Libra Calc and then import the new file, and then upload to the radio. HTH. Glenn, that's a good idea about exporting to csv and editing in libre calc. Unfortunately though, when I pressed tab once, I heard silence. I think Jim could be onto something with a setting being out of range. I did send my baofeng .img file so he can examine it. Thanks much for your help.

As promised, I booted up my mac air that has Ubuntu-mate 21.10, the version before the current release (22.04). I have the same trouble. Chirp on this machine is installed via apt (sudo apt-get install chirp). If I run Chirp either by command line, or through Mate's accessories menu, I can access the menu bar, the file open dialogue, and the download dialogue, but no access to the memories tab, or settings tab once I've opened an image from my Baofeng UV5R. When I open the image, Orca says memories tab, but tab key and arrow keys yield silence. I'm not sure what, but something is definitely broken in the Python 3 version of Chirp accessibility wise. Should we file a bug report against Chirp, or Orca? Thanks for any input anyone has on this matter.

Most likely your radio has one or more settings that are invalid/out-of-range which often causes the the settings tab to not up. If you can send me your CHIRP Radio Images (*.img) file (many email service providers block them) I can find them and set to valid values for you.
