I have tried to program the UV-5R with Chirp and finally find out that I had to use a different model number to be able to even get the radio to upload to computer. I have added all my channels to the radio and downloaded to radio thinking that everything is fix. I can key the HT and it don't key the repeater. If I have it on channel mode, it shows both +- above the frequency display. It will drop the frequency down 0.600 like it suppose to. Ok if I have it on frequency mode , it shows - and drops down the 0.600 as its suppose to. Still don't key the repeater. I have a Baofeng UV-3 and it keys the repeater, I have a Yaesu FT-250 and it keys the repeater. I'm at my wits end on trying to get this HT program. If someone can please tell me what to do I will really appreciate it.

You sure it’s actually changing 600Hz and not another decimal? Sounds basic but it’s been done.

I just double check and it is 000.600 enter in. If its one that go up, it goes up .600 or down .600. So I don't know?

Will it key the repeater if you’ve programmed the channel manually?

Hi Danny, does your repeater require a tone for access? If it does do you have that tone programmed into that channel on your file are also is it the right tone ? it is the only thing I can think of to check. It is not too hard to accidentally get the wrong phone program or to forget to put her in when programming a new radio. Good luck. On Nov 9, 2015 2:42 PM, "Lamar Brown" dlamarbrown@gmail.com wrote:

Hi Danny,
These radios do not use offsets in memory channels. The RX and TX frequency is programmed instead. So having the upper status display indicate "+-" is normal when the TX frequency differs from the RX frequency (repeater, odd-split, cross band and TX inhibited channels).
Email your CHIRP Radio Image (*.img) file to me and I will take a look at it.

Jim I'm at work right now so it will be tonight before I can send you my file. So If I understand you right, for instance on a repeater that has the frequency of 146.640 and the offset frequency was 146.040 I would need to program them in then?

Danny,
Not exactly. You set Frequency="146.64000", Duplex="-" and Offset="0.60000". Then from that supplied information, CHIRP will compute the TX frequency (146.040) and store it along with the other channel information. Then when you upload to the radio, 146.640 (RX freq) and 146.040 (TX freq) are sent to the radio (along with the other channel data) because that is what it requires.
Just to review, the radio's menu 25 [SFT-D] and menu 26 [OFFSET] only function and have a purpose in VFO (frequency) mode. These menus have absolutely no purpose (and therefor do not work) in MR (channel) mode. So the upper status display only shows "+" and "-" individually when the radio is in VFO mode. In MR mode the upper status display shows "+-" to indicate the RX frequency and TX frequency are not the same. It doesn't matter if you are programming the radio with CHIRP or the keypad, that's how the radio works.

Ok Jim here is my file. Look at it and tell what I need to do then.

Danny,
Just a quick guess... you've programmed all of the repeaters with Tone Mode=TSQL
This requires that every repeater needs to transmit a CTCSS tone back to your to open your squelch. If it doesn't, you will never hear anything. My understanding is that the majority of ham repeaters to not transmit a CTCSS tone back to the user.
This first thing I would do it pick a nearby repeater and set Tone Mode=Tone. Then try to access that repeater and see if there is any difference. If that fixes it, then change the rest.
Jim KC9HI
I'm not as fast as Jim Unroe, nor as knowledgeable, but hey, here's a 2nd opinion. :-)
Have you tried "Tone" instead of TSQL? TSQL means it uses the tone for both RX & TX. Tone is just for TX. If you don't need the tone to RX (and you almost never actually NEED it, even if it is nice to help cut out stray noise), but you're using it, the TSQL will filter out the repeater so you can't hear it.
So I wonder if you're really not hitting the repeater, or if you just can't hear it coming back after you do open it. Can you try TX with this radio as-is, while monitoring on a different radio that you know works with this repeater? I'm curious to know if the other radio hears you opening the repeater, but this one doesn't. And then I would try using "Tone" instead of TSQL for this repeater. Actually, probably most of those repeaters on your list.
