[chirp_users] BTech UV-25X4 "Radio did not Enter Clone Mode"
Hello:
I had purchased this Baofeng Tech model UV-25X4 and the FTDI (PC04) programming cable from the same vendor. I had accessed and programmed this radio several times with minimal issues. I had it in use for some time as a base, then mobile unit. After less than a year, it stopped transmitting. I determined the radio would power up and receive, but no longer had output. In prepping to return, I hooked in the radio into the same computer and cable I programmed it with to create a back up and reset radio to factory settings, but kept getting the error "Radio did not Enter Clone Mode". I also tried it with the latest CHIRP builds, a different computer, all the same result. I have verified the cable is being recognized through my OS's System Profiler and my Terminal programs. I had consulted your CHIRP troubleshooting and the Miklor site. I had also tried some other tricks and variations, but still unsuccessful.
Thinking it could another fault with the radio, I waited for the new radio and tried again- ALL SAME RESULT. I am now stuck. I'm considering buying another cable and try again. I would appreciate any guidance.
I have Apple Mac OS 10.6.8, FTDI FT231X USB UART cable (S/N: DN01RX2S), used CHIRP Builds 20170414 through 20180331, and running Python Runtime KK7DS I have noted on your Issues section you sometimes request log file(s) to be sent for analysis. I'm not sure how to do that or I would attach one here.
Regards,
Scott
I have had a Btech cable fail before.

You are plugging the programming cable into the data port and not accidentally into the speaker port, right? I know I've made that mistake a time or two.

Scott: I am an old-timer (80) and was first licensed in 1955 and I now very much concerned about the times we live in. I presently have acquired a UV-5R and a UV-82 . . . both new and both Baofeng. A programming cable came with the UV-5R. My learning curve for this new stuff has changed considerably and I don't (literally) have a lot of time left for trying to learn new concepts, only to have the hardware fail at some point on down the road. Would you mind sharing any thoughts regarding what you are planning on doing at this point. I really don't know why I have any need for . . two . . VHF/UHF hand-helds anyway. In regard for what seems to be "bad times ahead" I am wondering if a handful of "good" FRS radios might be a better investment in the communications department.
Regards -- and thanks in advance for any advice you would care to pass along . . .

FRS are virtually useless. Go for GMRS and buy a license.

Under the new 2017 rules, FRS is no longer limited to .5 watts and the number of channels has been expanede. The old FRS/GMRS bubble pack radios that put out 2 watts or less ERP are now FRS only and do not require a license to use any available channel. The old FRS/GMRS bubble pack radios that put out more than 2 watts are now GMRS only and do require a license (even the 7 channels that used to be FRS only).

Why would you want low power FRS radios with limited range and capabilities when the radios you have can do so much more?

I'm looking at both sides. I'd like to keep the Baofengs . . . if they still work on down the road a bit. And let's hope that at least some of the repeater owner/custodians are giving a serious look at solar.

Last year the FCC overhauled Part 95. Before FRS was only allowed 0.5 W on 14 channels. Now FRS is allowed up to 2 W on 15 462 MHz channels and 0.5 W on 7 467 MHz channels. Basically they fixed it so that people using dual service GMRS/FRS radios without a GMRS license are legal now.
It's still not legal to use radios on FRS/GMRS/MURS that are not Part 95 certified.

Ok, belated replies to a couple of you in this message string:
1.) Charles K4CEH- FB on being “old-timer” ham!! It’s always (usually) good to learn new skills. I have two Baofeng UV-5R’s and use them quite a bit- programmed thru CHIRP.. I don’t know enough about the FRS/GMRS bands to comment upon, but others more versed in this have commented already and I can’t add to to their thoughts.
2.) Jim KC9HI- you know, I didn’t think about checking to see where I was plugging my cable into the back of the radio. I only noted the screen changes which I thought the computer WAS communicating with the radio, then failed. GUESS WHAT? You were correct! The EXT SPKR/HDPHN jack IS the same diameter as the COMM port! I looked and corrected and now chirp works great- AMAZING! Of course, I did this AFTER I already ordered another cable, oh well. Couldn’t hurt to have a back up. This also answers Charles’s other inquiry of my next step. NOW I can use my BTech radio! Thanks for the comments and thoughts. 73’s all -Scott N6ZAI
