[chirp_users] Chirp on Android
Calling all app developers! Please, please develop some software so that we can use chirp with our Android phones and tablets so that we can take massive programming of the radios into the field where it is needed the most. Please! It would be so helpful to us. thank you.
Oh what fun it'll be to port CHIRP (written in Python) to either Android/IOS. Biggest problem will be communicating between device and radio - just like it is with Windows/OS X

Currently my Toshiba laptop communicate perfectly with my UVA d2l. Both my tablet and my lg phone have the OTG configuration which means you can plug in a standard USB cord. I can also read thumb drives on my phone or tablet by doing that. I am quite sure someone somewhere can figure out how to get the phone to interface with the circuitry in the cord and transfer data to in from the radio. It just seems to me to be the next logical step in the system. On Nov 17, 2015 11:35 AM, "Paul Slootweg" paul.slootweg@gmail.com wrote:

Not really. You already have drivers for SDR, USB to RS232 adapters, and so on. It's just a matter of the type of radio (driver on cable or on radio) and the driver used. If it recognizes it as an COM port, it should work. The software is the tricky part.

Paulo, are you saying that it is not likely that software will never be developed for Android? That would be quite disappointing if so. I wonder are there any tablets that run Windows! would it work that way? On Nov 17, 2015 11:43 AM, "RavenMaster" ravenmaster@sapo.pt wrote:

I would assume am M$ Surface would work. Dell has some windows tablets also, don't see why that would not work as well. But yes I will say, an android version would be awsome.

If the tablet is windows based and has USB port CHIRP will work. But seeing it in android format, think that'll be on the back burner for a while. The developers work hard for us free of charge, and we thank them very much. lets not push them. On Nov 17, 2015 10:54 AM, "James Jalbert" kc1ecv@gmail.com wrote:

Windows RT probably won't work on a MS Surface, regular Windows should.

Yes, My Asus convertible runs chirp handily. I’ve been using it for a year now, and recently updated it to Win10, It supports my activities in RACES/ARES as well as a Communications officer with the Local Search and Rescue team.

I programmed my companies radios the last time using a micro-usb otg adapter with the radio cable. There's no worries there. As long as it boots Windows, it will work.

Gary, be careful with that one. If it's the UB15MS10 - that's a Best Buy unit which has had a lot of problems - mostly with the screen. .... Sorry, I had to go looking since I'm in the market for a decent inexpensive tablet.

Oh what fun it'll be to port CHIRP (written in Python) to either
Android/IOS.
Biggest problem will be communicating between device and radio - just like it is with Windows/OS X

Gary, the link I gave is actually the 10A ... Best Buy has several "store brands" (UnBranded for one) and this unit looks like the stores dumped it to resellers. And I was hoping to find a decent 10" tablet.... humbug!!

Hi Gary
I've only heard of one Windows/Android device. From memory, this had two mass storage systems - one in the tablet and one in the keyboard. Windows could only be booted when the tablet was connected to the keyboard unit. It was only Android when separated.
If this is the one you're seeing, then it's probably not useful for this (or anything else that I can think of :-).

I think you will find more support in other groups. Check out raspberrypiforhams. TI think there are a lot of android based boards out there albeit they are not phones.

I believe I tried it once on my inexpensive windows tablet. Chirp ran fine, but I believe the prolific clone usb did not work with the tablet. Now that I've installed win 10 on it, I'll try again. Maybe a better quality usb would work.

Every windows tablet works fine, it's windows. Android is the point here. As i said, we already have boat/plain tracking through SDR chips, we can use SDR itself, we can even program radios by Bluetooth commands (repeater book). Chirp port to Android will be the tricky part for me.

I meant i believe it will not be as easy as solving the connection "problem" but hey, i'm not a Android developer to assure that.

Paulo, are you saying that it is not likely that software will never be developed for Android? That would be quite disappointing if so. I wonder are there any tablets that run Windows! would it work that way?

Not really. You already have drivers for SDR, USB to RS232 adapters, and so on. It's just a matter of the type of radio (driver on cable or on radio) and the driver used. If it recognizes it as an COM port, it should work. The software is the tricky part. 73, Paulo a.k.a. Firstly I am not an Android dev, but hopefully can add something to the discussions... as has been pointed out the biggest problem here would be to get a physical serial connection to the radio.
Some phones/tablets can do USB host via an 'OTG' cable such as: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/USB-2-0-A-Female-to-Micro-B-Male-OTG-Data-Host-Cable-...
This would allow a serial adapter to be plugged in, and thus make a connection to the radio.
Android is 'just' linux underneath with a GUI/Enviroment layer on top. I know of another project which achieves the same types of serial connection, so it might just be possible to port Chirp. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gpsplus.rtkgps
I would expect that the whole GUI would have to be re-written for/in Java/Davac, but someone might have a better suggestion. Simon
There is Python for Android so I'm curious if Chirp could indeed work w/o a port to native Java:

Here's my list of things required for Chirp to work on Android. Not sure if I'm missing anything.
- USB serial cable to radio - USB OTG adapter - USB OTG support in device hardware - USB OTG support in device kernel - USB serial driver for radio cable bundled in kernel (keep in mind most Android devices use stripped down kernels without most of the device drivers available to desktop Linux, and have locked bootloaders preventing custom kernels) - Linux/Android permissions for app to open serial device (like adding yourself to dialout group on Ubuntu) - Python for Android - GTK 2.x for Android - PyGTK for Android
Once these dependencies are satisfied, Chirp should work just fine on Android. You'd probably want to add a mouse to this list, because otherwise things like right-click menus would be inaccessible.
All these things are possible, but will take a lot of work. GTK and PyGTK are the biggest issues for developers, while device/kernel support will block the majority of consumers. If you want to pursue this further, you should look into the state of GTK on Android. Short of a rewrite, there's nothing Chirp can do about lack of GTK on Android.

Much of the Python code should work on Android without much problem given the existing Android port of Python. Much of the underlying driver stack (USB, etc) is even the same with Chirp/Python/Linux because Linux often uses the same chipsets used in Android hardware.
The problem, as I understand it, is that the Chirp Graphical User Interface has not been ported and is not expected to ever be. That does not prevent the use of a new GUI on Android making the same Python calls that the Chirp GUI now does. At the very least, it *should* be possible to make an Android app which allows some *basic tasks* to be performed from an Android phone or tablet short of what the full Chirp GUI does.
For instance, it would be handy to just be able to backup a radio's configuration or upload a preconfigured image in the field without even the ability to edit the images. Right now, we can pull a radio from our radio cache and clone handset-to-handset without Chirp. We can also field program a radio manually and clone it without Chirp. What would be useful to do from a phone would be too pull a *different* configuration (generated in Chirp elsewhere), perhaps backing up the radio first, and upload it to the radio or to download the field-programmed changes and send them to someone else.
That much should be a good test-of-concept.
