[chirp_users] Changing data Baofeng UV5
I gave up trying to programme my Baofeng UV-5RV2+ using the previous CHIRP release.
When CHIRP next came out, I thought maybe I could get it to programme my radio.
I went through the steps to grab an *img file and load it into the radio.
Then I saved it with modifications then downloaded, with a window saying "cloning".
Exiting CHIRP, turning the radio off and on does NOT change the file.
Am I doing something wrong?

Hi Julian, Did you download from the radio first? It is my understanding that you never upload anything until you first download from the radio. Also, you should save your first downloaded image as a backup image. You will then do modifications to what you downloaded, and only then upload to the radio. HTH.

First off, your terminology is reversed. Imagine that your radio is sitting on your computer. The data goes down from the radio to CHIRP (download) and up from CHIRP to the radio (upload).
Exiting CHIRP, turning the radio off and on does NOT change the file.
So if the upload "cloning" process completed without any errors reported, then whatever was changed in CHIRP was changed in the radio.
Am I doing something wrong?
Most likely. For example, what many UV-5R owners will do when they use CHRP for the first time is to add alpha tags (names) to each of the programmed memories. After they've added the names in CHIRP and uploaded the changes to the radio, they expect to see the names displayed in the radio. When they don't they mistakenly think that CHIRP somehow didn't work. The real problem is that they never changed the radio's Memory Display Format to "NAME" so that the radio would display them.
Using the radio's keypad: Menu 21 (MDF-A): CH | NAME | FREQ Menu 22 (MDF-B): CH | NAME | FREQ
Or from within CHIRP: Settings -> Basic Settings -> Display Mode (A): Channel | Name | Frequency Settings -> Basic Settings -> Display Mode (B): Channel | Name | Frequency
This is most likely your situation.

Another thing that confused me when I first programmed my baofengs was the vfo channel mode and frequency modes. If it's in frequency mode then it won't display the names either. You can make channel A or channel B display the name or both slots if you want to, which only shows the names when on the channel mode screen. On the uv82 you have to hold down menu and turn the power on to change modes but most of the others have an easier way to change it.

I show: Display Mode (A) Name Display Mode (B) Name
This is most likely your situation.
So here's what happens:
MR shows V16 (Channel name in but VFO shows 146.460 in my worksheet. Shown on CHIRP it is 145.200 which is what I want.
I save the file with 145.200 V16 on the worksheet, then I do Radio > Upload I still get the right channel name, but the wromng Freq on my radio.
Do I have to change Display Mode (A) Name to Frequency?
Simply put Chanel Name can be changed, but not the Freq.
No matter what I do, I can't change the freq.
I show:
Display Mode (A) Name Display Mode (B) Name
OK. So MDF-A and MDF-B are set to NAME in the radio. So you will not be able to see the programmed frequency.
This is most likely your situation.
So here's what happens:
MR shows V16 (Channel name in but VFO shows 146.460 in my worksheet. Shown on CHIRP it is 145.200 which is what I want.
This is because the frequency shown in VFO (frequency) mode has absolutely nothing to do with the frequency of the channel named V16 in MR (channel) mode.
I save the file with 145.200 V16 on the worksheet, then I

You can't see the frequency. You set the radio to display only names.
Do I have to change Display Mode (A) Name to Frequency?
What most people do is set one display line to FREQuency and the other display line to NAME. That way when you set both display lines to the same channel number (they have to be synced manually because each display line is independent and the radio has no ability to automatically sync them), the channel name and frequency can be seen at the same time.
Simply put Chanel Name can be changed, but not the Freq.
You don't know what the frequency is because you have hidden it from yourself. To see the programmed frequency you must set the MDF of the selected display line to FREQ. You choose what you want to see: CHannel, NAME or FREQuency. So if you have selected the channel named V16 in the bottom (B) display line and you want to see the frequency you must change MDF-B to FREQ. Then switch MDF-B back to NAME to see the NAME. Or as mentioned above, set one display line to NAME and the other to FREQ and then manually select the same channel number in both display lines to see the name and frequency at the same time.
No matter what I do, I can't change the freq.
The frequency is whatever you have set the frequency to in the memory row of CHIRP for the channel number named V16. You have just configured your radio in a way that you hidden the frequency from yourself.
Every indication is that CHIRP is working as expected. If you would like to continue discussion of how your radio is operated, please contact me directly. I would be happy to help you with that.

The radio continues to show the old, no longer in use freq. This is baffling.

Now I can see the Freqs displayed. I can't confirm because I hear no traffic, which is I am told the normal condition.
Thanks very much for your help. I appreciate it.
