You don't say which version of Ubuntu but you might need to point your /etc/apt/sources.list entry for Chirp back to xenial.

Sorry: FF = Focal Fossa
Do most folks run the Xenial build and have no trouble with that on later releases?

No. I'm using 19.10 but point the sources.list entry to a version that I know works so I get the correct updates.

No dice. Using the Eoan PPA (and all the others that I tried) I get multiple uninstallable package errors. I think that the Focal PPA is broken given that the specific error it throws is this:
E: Unable to locate package chirp-daily
I suppose I could boot up an older machine to do this, but I was hoping to just have it on my regular laptop that I take with me.

Since Focal no longer supports python2 directly, it's probably that chirp is a 'no longer supported' package.

But there's a PPA for Focal (but without the chirp-daily package, apparently)...?
Perhaps it's still a work in progress?

Since Focal no longer supports python2 directly, it's probably that chirp is a 'no longer supported' package.

Hi Zap,
Why don't you just download the latest chirp-daily and install it directly?
https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/chirp-daily-20200516.tar...
Untar and install.
Or ask the others issued Current Ubuntu which repository is working for them.
Dan recommends:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:dansmith/chirp-snapshots sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install chirp-daily
But you've tried this, but every darned repository version fails, most likely due to a dependency using python that's using a newer version than chirp-current does.
You might look around to see if Ubuntu has the application pyenv which allows using specific versions with certain programs.
I'm trying to get that very program working to allow me to use python 3.7 on a distro SLINT (Slackware) that only has python 2.7. Haven't mastered yet, but I'm stubborn.
Best wishes,
David

That will not work with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa because Ubuntu dropped Python2 and CHIRP requires it.
Right now the only easy way to run CHIRP on Ubuntu 20.04 is installing WINE and then using the Windows version of CHIRP.

To do that, most will have to go purchase a copy of Windows. That's $150 down the drain.

While I'm highly sympathetic to all sides of this issue, I will note that WINE isn't screen-reader-accessible in the way Orca + current CHIRP is. As of now, CHIRP is the only way I have of accessibly programming some radios under Linux.
I wish I had the time and energy to volunteer to help CHIRP and about a dozen other causes. But I do hope we can figure out a way to stop kicking this Python migration can down the road. In the meantime, we should probably actively encourage use of Flatpak/AppImages over, well, just about everything else. One single semi-official flatpak repo is going to be a whole lot less trouble than a variety of haphazardly-maintained PPAs, COPRs, Debian repos, AUR repos (unless the Arch folks just install it manually anyway... :)

It's like Git for software. Updates are shipped in a binary repository that just downloads the delta. This works equally well installed system-wide, or installed into a user's home directory with full desktop integration. I've been backing up and restoring the same user-based Flatpak apps across several distribution upgrades by just backing up/restoring my home directory, and absolutely nothing in the Flatpak has broken. There are sometimes issues around permissions restrictions, but in general, Flatpak software just works for me across upgrades and even full distro switches.

I recently put the free VM from VMWare on my Linux desktop and bought a Win-10 Pro disk off eBay for $25.
It's kinda' clunky but not as clunky as Wine (to me.)
I bought a new laptop at Christmas with Win-10. I was planning to set it up for dual-boot, but I'm reading that Win updates like to overwrite the boot-loader so I might just leave it Win and live with it.

It's kinda' clunky but not as clunky as Wine (to me.)
I find Windows on VM to be very slow and doesn't pick up my native screen resolution.
I bought a new laptop at Christmas with Win-10. I was planning to set it up for dual-boot, but I'm reading that Win updates like to overwrite the boot-loader so I might just leave it Win and live with it.
I was dual booting but, like you, found that Windows updates wiped the boot manager. I'm thinking of buying a cheap Win laptop just for the things I can't do in Linux.

THANKS very much for this info! It looks like exactly what I needed to do in order to get Chirp working on Focal Fossa, but I decided that I didn't want to have a bunch of backported libraries on my main machine so I didn't end up trying it. Instead I used an older machine running Ubuntu 19.10, and that worked normally and without any issues.
