Try a couple different radio profiles.
Does the download work?

Hi, Leilani. I have a BTECH UV-5X3 and had some simple issues trying to program. When you attached the cable to the radio, was the radio on or off? Is it on or off when you get the error message? (I had to make sure it was off when I plugged it in, then on when I tried to upload the radio data to CHIRP, and if it asked me to turn it on or off I did that) Is the cable pushed all the way into the radio? (not trying to be condescending...that was one of my problems...the plugs have to be pushed in hard) ...hoped that helped... de A Hendrix KO4UMY

This may seem rudimentary but I had a similar issue and it was because the programming cable wasn't in the radio all the way. Give it a really hard push and try again. My cable connector was a bit bigger than the slot so if I didn't REALLY push it wouldn't seat all the way in.
