[chirp_users] Chirp Data transfer
I am am new to the idea of programming radios from the computer, and the chirp software looks good.
But I can not get it to work!
I have a Yaesu VX-3 (among others) that I would like to program.
I installed the CHIRP program. I also have the USB cable that I got from e-bay. It is installed, and at least it says that it is working OK, and is on Com 3.
I thought that I needed to go to "Radio" and then "Download from radio" and get the data that is presently in the VX-3. At least that seems logical to me! I try to go that, but can not get the data from the VX-3. I do get the box that says "Cloning from radio".
It says Com 3 OK, and appears that it is trying to download the data from the VX-3. I have the VX-3 in clone mode, and it says it is transmitting data (I pushed "Band" after getting into clone mode, and the display says "Tx"). That sounds like it should work, but it times out after about 30 seconds or so. Nothing happens.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks.

Just so we're clear, the radio is in clone mode, you click "OK" on the computer and see it say "downloading from radio", and then you push the band button, right? That should be the procedure.
Are you sure that the cable is pushed all the way into the jack? Some of them are hard to seat fully.
Which version are you using? 0.1.11 or a daily?
Maybe Rick can offer some suggestions here, as he wrote and has the most experience with the VX3 driver.
What you describe is the way I am doing it.
Yes, I have plugged and unplugged the cable several times. Same result. I am sure it is in all the way.
I am using ver 0.1.11
By the way, I am using Win XP with SP3.
Since I wrote this, I also got an older serial cable (as in 9 pin D connector and not usb) that I had for a VX-5, and tried it. Same result (although it is on Com 1).
Thanks.

If I had to guess, and I do, this may be a windows issue. Perhaps there is a conflicting library or something? It certainly sounds to me like you are doing it right.
The only other thing I can think of, since I can't find you in the fcc database, are your radio models US version or something else? If you have the European models of the radios it may not work (but can pretty easily be modified with your help).
Thoughts? Rick
Thanks.

Thanks for the info.
I will try it on another computer and see what happens.
I don't know why you can not find me in the FCC data base. I have only been there almost 50 years! I am using the USA version of the HT.
Thanks.

Ken,
Unlucky I guess, qrz had you but wanted a login to show your info, lame.
Dan,
Sounds to me like he is doing the right thing, and has a supported model, any ideas about potential windows related fail here? I'd like to go in order of most likely and frankly, windows failing always seems most likely to a linux user :-)

Thanks.

Well, there is always more stuff to go wrong in that environment, it seems, but the clone code is the same for all the VX radios and people obviously use that in Windows all the time.
Having tried two cables, including one "real" serial port cable is what I would have tried, but Ken already did that. Trying another machine (as he said he would) is a good start -- windows users report back with things working on another machine for no apparent reason, but I never hear what changed.
Ken, can you grab the debug.log file that chirp generates *after* attempting (and failing) to do a clone? That might have something useful in it.
I am at a loss to figure why it will not work!
I tried installing CHIRP on my laptop, under Win XP, SP3. It installed fine. I do not have a "real serial port" on the laptop, so have no choice but to use the USB cable. I installed it, and it appeared on COM 5. So far, so good.
I tried downloading from the VX-3 to CHIRP, and have the same problems that I had on my main computer. The VX-3 says it is sending data, but eventually times out and displays "error". The CHIRP program gets nothing. This is exactly the same as I got before.
I thought maybe it did not like the CHIRP 0.1.11 I downloaded, so I downloaded ver 0.1.10 and used the VX-7 setting (just to see if I could get any data to transfer -- I know it won't be right). Still nothing.
At this point, I have done the following: used 2 different computers used 2 different cables (real serial, and USB) used two different VX-3 HTs Installed CHIRP 0.1.10 and used VX-7 settings gotten frustrated!
Any other ideas?
Thanks.

iirc it appears magically in the directory you installed chirp to. C:\Program Files\Chirp maybe?

Yes, please reproduce the issue, close chirp, and send me the debug.log file.

That is what I assumed, but it is not there.

Found it -- I think.
It just says "debug" with no ".log" I was searching for debug.log, and it did not appear.
The debug file simply says "Log initialized", and that is all. No real info in it. It is a 17 byte file. That is it, so I am afraid that is not much help either.
Any other ideas?
Thanks.
