I don't about Marine frequencies but it is illegal to use this radio to transmit on GMRS, FRS or MURS frequencies here in the USA as it is not Part 95 certified.

Not certified for 97 either. None of the Chinese imports are. Well none that I've seen or own.

I remember reading recently, cannot seem to find it now... That the Chinese radio Baofeng 5r was not being used for a CERT group because of a reason. Can anyone recall or explain why these radios are being discouraged to be used? Something about frequency separation or bleed over???

In most cases that is probably true, but in an emergency I was told you can use an means. These are strictly for just such an emergency. In any case if it comes to that, I don't think the FCC will be my biggest problem. I barely know how to turn these on yet, I have been studying daily at Hamtestonline, maybe I will learn something that will change my mind. Thanks anyway for the advice. Leo
