[chirp_users] Baofeng UV82L Port problem
New list member. I have a new Baofeng UV82L that a friend loaded with his freqs using Chirp on his PC. I have installed Chirp software on my Win 7 PC along with the correct Prolific usb serial to com port driver 7/31/2007 v 3.2.0.0. My pc recognizes the driver as Com 3 and is operating normally. I want to upload my phone freqs into my blank Chirp software but I am getting an error msg after plugging in the usb cable "cannot open port 3 [Error 2]. The system cannot find the file specified" and Chirp will not connect to the phone. Any Suggestions?
Buddy, if you think that's a phone you have in your hand, it's safe to say that CHIRP is the least of your worries.

Have not heard of 'phone' frequencies ? Not a ham then I take it. I'm in the wrong group.

Phone *frequencies* yes. Calling a RADIO a "phone", no. Not unless you really don't know a lot about radio.

Not to mention the whole idea of entering non-phone frequencies in a transceiver of this type in the first place.
Btw, I'm having trouble changing the plugs in my perambulator.

Anyone that doesn't know we use phone frequencies on 2 meters doesn't know their HAM history. Their was a time when you either were transmitting code or phone. Phone is voice audio modulation.
This is from the http://www.arrl.org/frequency-allocations web page.

Why do we need to have a long useless discussion about this on a trivial subject on a mailing list. Go to your neighbor's house and have an argument with them.

Can we stop being jerks, and showing the world that radio hams are rude, arrogant argumentative, and try actually being helpful loading phone frequencies into his device? Or would that be a little difficult for some? I did understand the query the first time I read it, and I struggled to understand the replies, and even more failing to understand how such a simple question and plea for help could be construed and something else.
Allan, have you solved it or do you still need assistance? I suspect you have one of a couple of issues, either the cable you have is using the counterfeit prolific chip and requires a certain driver to make it work. Alternatively as suggest you may need to remove the USB plug and plug it back in, possibly with a reboot. You may need to go to your hardware manager to uninstall the drivers for it and reinstall depending on the precise issue in hand.
Does your device manager show a yellow triangle warning for the comm port?

I've been sitting back watching the punks play this out. Voice and phone in the amateur radio world mean the same thing and have for a long time. You proved your ignorance at the expense of this fella just asking for some help. The negatively and "know it all" attitude is not needed in this hobby. Especially when as proven here many of you have know idea what you are talking about. On Oct 17, 2014 4:46 PM, "Dennis Smith" m1dlguk@gmail.com wrote:

I apologise if I appeared to be more like the pot calling the kettle black, but so angry a very bad day at work, followed by reading the lack of help on this thread, only irrelevant questions and unham like behaviour, without any actual help being offered (with the exception of a few people), I let fly without realising was becoming the person I was upset with. Hopefully people will see what needs to be done and will respond accordingly. A non-response is actually a worthy response if the alternative is not helping with the USB/serial issue.

Gentlemen,
Quit showing your lack of knowledge. I am an Extra and held a license for 40+ years. I got mine doing CW too. I have always used phone and voice interchangeably. If that’s a problem, there is a lot of us out here. I knew exactly what he was talking about.
I see the problem is solved and like we all know, it’s almost always a cable problem.

My thanks to Jeff and Adrian for their invaluable help with my Chirp VHF/UHF radio info request. FYI guys, I was copying code for the USCG 1958 - 1962 and got a General license in 1960 (which lapsed in 1972) and I recently got my General back and am putting up a multi-band vertical. Not having worked VHF/UHF before I was/am looking for a solution to my Chrip/USB serial com problem. Now, is there anyone that perhaps can provide some assistance to my problem? Allan W4EAB
Allan,
You’ll have to forgive Jeff and Adrian, and certainly dozens, hundreds?, or others who thought the same thing. When somebody posts on a ham related list or site asking for help with their “phone” the instant assumption is that the person isn’t a ham and shouldn’t he using the equipment they are trying to use. As is generally the case in all things, proper use of terminology avoids confusion and incorrect assumptions. To compound this problem you’ve signed your last email with a call sign. I know that the published database lags behind, but the call sign you listed, W4EAB, shows as expired in 2009 and cancelled in 2011 and was a vanity held by some with a different name, unless Allen is a nickname for Larry.
I’m more of a Mac guy than Windows, but it sounds like the driver may not be properly installed or the cable may be different than what was expected. A great resource is http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php

Thanks Jim. W4EAB is a vanity that I acquired. On the FCC website it shows a 2009 expiration and I picked it up for my initials. Sorry for the wrong terminology. Reverted to my old CG days when we used phone and voice interchangeably on our freq guards. I'm wondering if I have a bad cable perhaps. I'm going to borrow one from a friend of mine that downloaded his Chirp setup onto my radio from his win 7 computer with another cable. If that doesn't work I'll just return the radio and start all over with a cable that will accept the latest windows (7) driver updates. Tks for the advice.
Allan W4EAB
The error you report is an error that you normally get when you change the assigned com port number in device manager. When you do this, you need to unplug the cable from the USB port and plug it back in again to complete the port number change.
http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_ErrorMess.php#error2
It may be different in your case. I would guess that it is something else also using com port 3 creating a conflict. I would go into Device Manager and change to a different port number (CHIRP supports up to COM256). If you also want to be able to use the OEM software, then keep the port number within the range of 1 to 16.

Back when I was operating KP4CGB On the San Juan, P.R. CG Base I was always amazed (and pleased) with the courtesy and help that I received from fellow hams. Today I spent the afternoon researching my Com problem at a fellow ham's house and the friendly atmosphere, good conversation, and a cold beer, was most welcomed. I got back in the hobby because of the feeling of a common interest and help among hams and also the need to once again air some cw. My fellow amateur club ham(s) here has already warned me that commonality and helpfulness is not always the norm and a lot of hams have become cynical and cliquish. Thanks to all of those that offered *helpful* advice. I truly appreciate each and every one of your comments and did not expect any less from a group of hams. Unfortunately, as in any group, all are not of the same caliber. I hope each of you will continue to keep the true meaning of the ham tradition alive; but I'm going to friendlier environs for advice. I'm too old, too cranky, and do not suffer fools lightly. I just avoid them! 73s Guys! VA dit dit . . . . . dit
Problem solved! Was able to get the original Baofeng program disk to install the 2014 version of the Vista software on my Win 7 pc (someone told me this might work) and then used a spare usb serial com cable that my buddy had to connect the radio. (My original cable that came with the radio still will not work!) Opened Chirp to connect my radio and the correct Com3 was already entered. Downloaded all of the freqs settings my elmer had loaded in my radio and I'm good to go. Thanks for all the help guys! Believe I'll hang around if I can keep my "terminology" straight and not mention the "p" word again! :<))) Allan W4EAB
