If the FT-50R is programmable, then yes, all that's needed is to write a driver for it.

I wrote the beginnings of an FT-50 driver years ago. The radio seemed to behave erratically and I had a hard time nailing it down enough to be stable. IIRC, the driver is still in the tree, but disabled. If anyone wants to pick it up and try to fix it, I'd be happy. I don't own one, so I can't really tinker with it, even if I wanted to.
