[chirp_users] Grumpy old man.
I humbly wish and believe all posts about installing chirp on anything besides windows and Mac OS should start their own list.
I will unsubscribe soon if I see many more posts about installing chirp on Linux.
If you try to use any distro of linux as your OS of choice you better be savvy enough, like my son Chris, to solve these issues on your own.

That's kinda my feeling. We come for help with chirp based issues. Linux can be a bear to work with but its a support channel so thats what its for. Windows isn't marginalized, its just less need for support as the underlying architecture doesn't change as much so less need for support. C'mon lets play nice in the sandbox. Nobody failed sharing in kindergarten :-)

From a person who uses s closed source OS and does not understand CHIRP is
native to linux. I'm sure sonny boy asked no questions to learn linux.
Nothing more toolish than to demand a list comply to ones wishes or they will leave. Sorta like a 4 year old having a tantrum. Makes one wonder if some people just woke up with all the answers to pass their HAM exam or if they also asked questions.
I for one enjoy this list. I learn a lot reading others questions and seeing the solutions. Once in a while I even get to help. Sometimes I wonder how some people can see with their head shoved do far up the darkness.
Have a good weekend, unless you have made other plans.

You may not understand the situation, so let me explain. Windows doesn't have these issues because Dan takes care of these details for you. OSX had problems recently but somebody stepped up and created/updated a "runtime" that seems to have gotten people past the "Catalina hurdle". Richard is trying to do the same for Linux. If his flatpak just works it could become the "Runtime for Linux" equivalent and we can be done with a lot of the support questions that come in.

As hams, I have never understood why there seems to be such widespread hostility (or even apathy) toward Linux-based operating systems. Our technical legacy is in making our own gear, tinkering, tweaking, adjusting, and "hacking" solutions to technical problems. Linux-based operating systems are the only ones whose software licenses fully allow such activities. As such, we should be champions of its use. With more and more digital modes becoming frequent and predominant, we should work hard to ensure there is more software with free and open source licenses like CHIRP, and more support of free and open source operating systems based on Linux to run them. As much as we work to protect our right to experiment with radio hardware, we should also be working to promote our right to the same experimentation and exploration with software.
Even if folks don't realize it, Linux runs critical things in every part of your life. 99% of the Internet runs on Linux. Airplanes, public transportation systems, military & defense systems, your home WiFi router, even things like cars and appliances are more and more relying on Linux behind the scenes to ensure they work correctly.
Although my current HT's are not supported by CHIRP and I'm not a developer to be able to get them to that point, I am incredibly grateful for those working on full Linux support. Thank you! :-)

Totally agree, thanks Michael. There are politics surrounding closed vs. open source that we should try not to ignore here.
In my case the only reason my daily driver runs Windows 10 is that I have family members doing the same and "free IT services" to provide as a result. It's just easier if I stick to the same page as them when describing over the phone how to fix things...
But no antipathy towards any platform, whatever "gets 'er done" also works for me.

Peter, Michael: I concur with you both.
What I don't understand with the current move to produce a 'flatpack' version of chirp, is why the effort is not being expended to migrate chirp to version 3 of Python. Python version 2 is end of life. Period.
It's a bit like saying we have a DOS program written back in 1985 (or whenever), and we don't want to modernize it. My Python skills are not good enough to do it, but I would have thought that moving to version 3 was a better long term strategy.
My 2 cents. Roger G3YTN

I'd agree. Python 2 won't be supported any more which could prove problematic in many ways. IMHO, shipping a flatpak so Python 2 can still be provided should be seen more as "life support" and not a cure, which should still be a high priority for those that are able to do so. (We should remember that Python 3 was first released in December 2008.) :-)
The skills to create a flatpak are likely different than those needed to migrate to Python 3, so the efforts need not be mutually exclusive. There is an argument one could make for sticking with the flatpak approach even when Python is upgraded.

/Off Topic/ Teamviewer is a godsend. It's your friend. Take 30 minutes to read on it. Can support systems behind firewalls, you can see and interact with their desktops. Can take over and if it's configured, you can remote in without user interaction and fix a problem faster than you can talk someone through that might need help. Free for personal / family use.

Hello all, I’m a rank newbie here...just bought my first radio (Tenway UV-R5) and am working on the initial basic license. I’ve got Windows (10), MacOS (Catalina) and Linux (Ubuntu) all running on various PCs and laptops at home. I’ve been following these threads to learn about the various options with each platform, but I’d prefer to use an older dedicated Ubuntu laptop as my sandbox and to avoid OS-specific licensing costs. This will also allow me to avoid impacting the systems which I have to use for work and personal business.
I’d also like to set up a real base station at some point, but I suspect that’s a way off at this stage. Lot’s to absorb from this group! Regards, JR

It's not... or at least shouldn't be a crime to need help. With CHIRP or Linux or anything else. Getting guidance is how users support each other. Sorry the OP was offended but that's the nature of mailing lists. Users support each other. Email is an often forgotten jewel for easy, non-realtime, communication across the globe. If you don't need a "right now" answer its far better than some other technological evolutions that have come since. Good electronic communication skills and decent email tools make for a very competent communications platform. Further, somebody can search these archives and find conv. threads to help them solve problems in the future. Devs and users alike so yeah, mailing lists are supposed to be messy places. It's what has moved CHIRP and Linux forward. Dev's read the digests (maybe you should get the digest instead of actual posts) and this helps shape their development plans (ie when it's time to move the whole platform to Python (whatever the next point release is).
Have a beer. I know it's early but...

Spoken like a true Windows “geek”!
Assuming they have done the proper homework, isn’t that the proper use of the list? Why stop people from experimenting, collaborating and learning?
I bet if you upgrade from Windows XP you may have a setup question or 2, well maybe not Windows 10 has been around awhile.
With so many issues facing us, this is a problem you have control of. The list has a digest mode that you can use or as you suggest you could unsubscribe if you are not getting benefit from it.
I personally only every had one issue with Linux and that was when the daily build broke and the guidance I found for updating that was much appreciated.
Funny thing about grass, you can water it and smoke it but for some reason it always needs mowing and it nearly impossible to keep out the weeds!
I am sorry to be so grumpy back but passive aggressive complaints like this trample on my lawn.
I am very sorry to have trampled your grass.

Flame on 1. I find your post offensive as a Linux user. 2. Chirp was born on Linux, I bought an Icom IC -92AD and downloaded Chirp to program it when it was the only thing going on Linux, and that was all, that was back 2008 3. If I do a search I find a LOT more windows issues than any other OS. (so I could request the same of windows users but I do not) 4. The present issue is with the transition to Python 3. The devs all have lives and jobs so they work on it as they can. 5. If you do not like the fact that we LINUX users are here using our native Chirp then perhaps you should carry through and leave. we can carry on without you. And we WILL have the patience to put up with more Windows driver questions and other questions regarding that OS.
At times the questions regarding windows issues are all so pervasive as to make Chirp appear to be a windows app, it is a Linux app that has been packaged to work with other OS because Python is so pervasive.
I am sure there are times that those of us who are NOT windows users wish the same, but we push the keyboard away and do NOT keep the brain clutch engaged to the fingers driveshaft.
That said you may go wherever you so please. There is a word in my other language I rather love "váyase" it means go, keep on going to the deepest place and press on... There is a statement it is used in but I will not state it here but I would say that you would best follow through because I personally have lost any respect for you. Flame off
To those others who have questions I will state what my flight instructor told me when I did something that a question would have corrected.
"The only stupid question is the one you did NOT ask causing me to have to go and pick your torn pieces out of a broken airplane".
So do not let things like this quench your questions, if you need to ask them they are not stupid, and they are OS agnostic.

Interesting thread. Please understand that MacOS is like Linux in that it is a packaged Unix system. So if you’re going to toss Linux, you’re going to have to toss MacOS too. But has been said by so many, there is room for all.

Hahaha... that's how I feel about Chirp posts about Linux users having problems with serial ports. :-) Many new users just don't want actually read the docs, do ALL the steps, and do a simple set of Google searches to figure out where they went wrong. Many feel that following just 80% of the steps is good enough.
For now, I continue to use the "delete message" with prejudice.

I did a sort and got the following: Questions regarding Prolific drivers/Windows 440 dating from 17 Aug 11 Questions regarding Linux serial ports 170 dating from 07 Oct 11.
So I would say that us Linux users could have the same feeling about Windows as has been stated about us, but I think most of us Linux folks would rather that the person posing the question regardless of OS get a answer and get on with their rat killing, but it is obvious that not all of those of the Microsoft persuasion have that same feeling thought it would appear that their OS generates the larger amount of questions.
The thing of note as has been observed elsewhere is that it is pretty much the same issue. A quick review of the list history would make it most apparent but most people do not look, they just ask, so be it, they get an answer (roll back your driver) and most take care of it.
That is just dealing with the prolific issue, there are many more Windows questions, in general Linux has been pretty quiet until Python 2 started to go away, that will impact all of us sooner or later.
As has been pointed out elsewhere, you Windows users get a package with all of it setup for you. Us Linux people get an install but it depends on the Python libs that are in the OS. They are moving on and so that is the reason for the noise level as people are trying to work out a solution, which will in the long run benefit all of us.
Diatribes such as from the OP are not welcome and I think that many of us (I know I do) find that particular one offensive. Were it not for Linux and the original work by Dan and others there would be no Chirp. You would be using some 3rd party proprietary paid for product, or a vendor product that is far inferior to what Chirp is.
I have often wondered how much time is spent making Chirp work for Windows when there are other things that would be nice to see it work on. But I will not go there because there are a large number of Windows users and they are needed just as much as any of the other OS users. Just remember that street runs both ways, and if you are not happy you are most welcome to leave, the lawn you are talking about is a commons and we all have to use it. Good day and may you live in interesting times.
