i am very new to this, I am trying to program using CHIRP to the Baofeng UV-5R, as I am licensed to use GMRS, CHIRP, when I programmed in the frequency, put in DTSC in the tone mode column, which prevented me from hearing anyone, I changed it to tone, now I can hear other users, the tone is set at 88.5, channels that have a repeater are set to + 5.000000, FM at high power. As I am not sure if any of the settings are correct, as I am not able to contact anyone, is there anyone who can help me with the settings I need in all the columns? I appreciate any assistance you can give me in this!

Dave,
I'm not understanding your problem.
Your repeater, on 462.500, does it have a CTCSS tone requirement to key the repeater? If so, you must set the radio to that tone - is that where you got the 88.5 tone?
If you monitor that frequency, 462.500, do you hear people on the repeater?
If you have the proper tone set, and the setting is for Tone, to send the proper CTCSS tone when you transmit, do you hear the repeater after you stop transmitting?
If you set the proper tone and choose tonesq, you will only hear people if the repeater transmits the tone you've set.
You could be struggling with one or more issues:
- Distance, the repeater is just too far away - Settings, you may not have the correct freq or CTCSS tone - lack of traffic, there just may be no one using the repeater when you are
If you think you've done everything right, and you've set the tone setting to Tone (not Tonesq), I'd suggest just turning the radio on sitting in the charging cradle, monitoring the repeater 24x7 and see if you hear anything - I don't think GMRS repeaters are used that often, but some organizations may use the repeater for nets or other on-air activity, and just leaving the radio on will help you find out if/when the repeater is used.
Have you tried reaching the repeater owner?
Good luck,
Ken

Usually repeaters don't send out a CTCSS tone, they only use one to make sure it only hears signals that contain a CTCSS tone. Thus, the 88.5 should be fine for the rFreq, but you will need to send a tone to open the ears of the repeater. Glen,
I disagree, many, many repeaters that use cut SS tone 'pass' the incoming tone to the output, so that users only hear silence until their repeater transmits another users signal.
The repeater requires a tone to 'open' the repeater, and the receiver is silenced until it 'hears' a signal with the proper ctcss tone.
With the wrong tone on transmit, the repeater will not rebroadcast the signal, it will be ignored.
If the receiver has the wrong tone set in its receiver and the receiver is programmed to only break squelch when the proper tone is heard, the user will hear nothing.
The tone squelch function is optional, it can be turned off, and the receiver will 'hear' any RF signal that is strong enough to break squelch.
The above is true for most commercial FM repeaters, as well as amateur repeaters. It may be different in the GMRS user space, but I doubt it. If there is a doubt about any particular repeater 'passing' the ctcss tone on transmit, the user can set their radio to only transmit the required tone, and to not have any output tone from the repeater. On a Baofeng that would mean setting signaling to 'tone' and not 'tonesq' (I think, from memory).

You never HAVE TO set an RX tone, you can choose to control what you hear by simply setting the radio RF Squelch to suppress static between transmissions.
I see 4x repeaters near your license location, W0OFK 146.730 And KG0S 444.125 both transmit tones on their output, while W0OFK 444.250 and K0RPT 146.880 do not transmit tones.
The above is from RepeaterBook, one of the data sources integrated into CHIRP.
Using an RX tone/signaling setting is optional, not required.

Your decision to not use CTCSS tone squelch on your radios has nothing to do with the original statement you made:
Usually repeaters don't send out a CTCSS tone, they only use one to make sure it only hears signals that contain a CTCSS tone.
The OP was struggling to work a local GMRS repeater, and IF he had activated ToneSq and the repeater didn't pass the tone thru, that could explain his issue. IF he had specified the wrong tone for receive and it didn't match what the repeater passes, that could explain his issue.
We are still awaiting a response from David if his issue is resolved.

Thus, the 88.5 should be fine for the rFreq, but you will need to send a tone to open the ears of the repeater. Glenn

Sorry, I thought I put that in, it's 462.500
Not the frequency. Where is it? What is its callsign? That way it can be looked up in RepeaterBook or other GMRS resources.

Hi David, The repeaters will likely have a CTCSS tone for you to transmit. This is different from the receive CTCSS. Like your receive CTCSS, when it is set to an off tone, you will only hear transmissions sent to you with that tone. The repeaters work the same way, they won't hear you unless you send a transmit CTCSS that allows them to hear your radio. They are all different, based on how the manager of that repeater set it up. i am very new to this, I am trying to program using CHIRP to the Baofeng UV-5R, as I am licensed to use GMRS, CHIRP, when I programmed in the frequency, put in DTSC in the tone mode column, which prevented me from hearing anyone, I changed it to tone, now I can hear other users, the tone is set at 88.5, channels that have a repeater are set to + 5.000000, FM at high power. As I am not sure if any of the settings are correct, as I am not able to contact anyone, is there anyone who can help me with the settings I need in all the columns? I appreciate any assistance you can give me in this! _______________________________________________ Users mailing list users@lists.chirpmyradio.com https://lists.chirpmyradio.com/postorius/lists/users.lists.chirpmyradio.com To unsubscribe, send an email to users-leave@lists.chirpmyradio.com To report this email as off-topic, please email users-owner@lists.chirpmyradio.com List archives: https://lists.chirpmyradio.com/hyperkitty/list/users@lists.chirpmyradio.com/
