[chirp_users] FW: Chirp not talking to radio - Ubuntu 14.04
Hi,
Just installed Chirp on Ubuntu 14.04 and can't get it to read anything from the radio.
I have confirmed the cable works, both the RS-92 software and the Windows version of Chirp running in Wine can talk to the radio 100%.
The USB to Serial cable is a genuine chip, not one of the fakes and works in Windows and Linux just not with the Ubuntu version of Chirp. It has also been used with the Icom Android app on a tablet and phone.
All lines have Error in the Name field and no data is shown from the radio in any cell. Also, there doesn't appear to be any communication with the radio as the light on the adaptor doesn't light at any time. It lights when RS-92 is talking to the radio and when the Windows version of Chirp is talking to the radio.
The com port is /dev/ttyUSB0, working with the other software but not with Chirp Ubuntu.
If it's any help this is what repeats many times in the log file: Exception running RadioJob: 'NoneType' object has no attribute '__getitem__' -- Exception: -- Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/chirpui/common.py", line 111, in _execute result = func(*self.args, **self.kwargs) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/chirp/ic9x_icf.py", line 63, in get_memory return ic9x_icf_ll.get_memory(self._mmap, number) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/chirp/ic9x_icf_ll.py", line 123, in get_memory mmap = get_raw_memory(_mmap, number) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/chirp/ic9x_icf_ll.py", line 47, in get_raw_memory return MemoryMap(mmap[offset:offset+size]) TypeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute '__getitem__' ------ Job Args: (25,) Job KWArgs: {} Job Called from: File "/usr/bin/chirpw", line 154, in <module> gtk.main() File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/chirpui/memedit.py", line 1175, in <lambda> refresh.connect("clicked", lambda x: self.prefill()) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/chirpui/memedit.py", line 1036, in prefill job = common.RadioJob(handler, "get_memory", i)

Wenlock,
My CHIRP daily-20151023 works fine in the Ubuntu 14.4LTS virtual machine that I created.
Did you install CHIRP daily-20151023 from the PPA as instructed on the CHIRP download page (see "Ubuntu Linux Users")? That will get you the latest version of CHIRP (the same version that you most likely downloaded and installed for "Windows").
Or did you install CHIRP v0.3.1 (released back in April of 2013) from the Ubuntu Software Center?

...and do not forget to update your kernel on Ubuntu. Until a few days from now, there was a kernel that DID NOT support USB-to-Serial-devices correctly. So make your updates and you may be fine! (helped here a lot!!!!)
If you can not update try a rollback and try an earler kernel!

Hi,
Ok, I have 0.4.1 so not sure where installed from.
Uninstalled it and followed the instructions on the site but can't find Chirp.
Getting late so I'll have a deeper search in the morning.

Hi Jim at al,
Ok, found on the page relating to manual download that I need to type "chirpw" to run Chirp.
Would have been helpful to have that information on the download page, but never mind, got it running now and download from the radio works fine.
Btw, best thing about Linux is that I can use hardware that doesn't work in Windows. Like the adaptor for a led badge that uses a fake USB/serial chip.
Another best thing is that Windows 8.1 is abusing my HD and I can't use the computer due to it. MS have been unable to offer a fix so I am now a Ubuntu user. Kind of fun finding what I can run without windows. Not too bad really!
Thanks for your help and sorry to have bugged you
