After some web searching - No, I don't know what DMESG did to help with the USB driver. It seems to be just a listing program with no connection to installing drivers. Maybe it was a coincidence of timing that the driver was not there and after DMESG was there but it would not work before issuing the command and did work after only issuing that command. If anyone has any insight, that is for another forum, I guess. Not directly related to CHIRP.

Anyway, CHIRP seems good on Ubuntu.
