Re: setting up Scanner function UV-5R family
John:
A very logical question. No only do I have the NWS 6 or 7 broadcast channels, I also have the two Skywarn channels for my home area, as well as some Fire and EMS dispatch channels in my home area. This 'odd' group allows me to move around the state (in Florida) and not have to specifically program or dial to the specific channel.
It's something I want to try now that I know what the TO/CO/SE designations mean.
Thanks for your help on this.

I'm curious why you want to scan the NWS frequencies. Generally, there is only one that covers your geographical area and the others are out of range. Also, because they never stop transmitting, your radio will stop on it every scan cycle.

I went to Chirp, on the Advanced Settings Tab and found "Scan Resume". My choices are:
TO CO SE
what do each of these do if I add them to my set up for the radio.
Thanks.

That's a very good reason but keep in mind the NWS never stops transmitting. (1) If the WX channels are set to scan, every time the radio gets to that memory slot it's going to stop scanning. (2) If your scan resume is set to CO (Carrier Operated) or SE (Seek) the radio will never resume scanning without your manual intervention every few seconds. (3) If the resume is set to TO (Time Out), it will stay on that memory slot for about five seconds before resuming the scan. It will do that every time the scan comes to that channel unless you manually intervene by pressing the scan button.
There is a solution to get the results you're wanting but I'm not up to typing an essay to explain it. I'll be happy to walk you through it by phone if you want to. Send an email directly to me at the address above with your number and day/time frame to call.
