[chirp_users] VX-6 Cable Issue
It's been a while since I've modified the memories on my VX-6's. Yesterday I tried to make some changes and came across this issue.
I'm able to upload but not download. When I try to download I get an "error" message on the Yaesu. Nothing happens in CHIRP until I power off the Yaesu then I get a failure message.
I tried this on two different Linux boxes. One a Xubuntu 13.10 netbook and the other a Xubuntu 13.10 VM running on my MacBook.
This is important to me since I often program radios of others when we officiate bicycle races. Being able to add frequencies to their existing list is essential.
FWIW, a similar cable worked just fine on my Baofengs.
TIA for any help.
Can you include the debug.log or console output from chirp?
What version of chirp are you running? (if you haven't tried the latest daily, please do)
Since you have a mac, have you tried mac version of chirp?

Jens,
Attached is my debug.log that contains the version #. Below is my system log after the cable is plugged in: tomb@trb-NC10:~$ dmesg | tail [ 1230.248185] usb 4-1: USB disconnect, device number 3 [ 1230.248873] pl2303 ttyUSB0: pl2303 converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0 [ 1230.248985] pl2303 4-1:1.0: device disconnected [ 1233.484145] usb 4-1: new full-speed USB device number 4 using uhci_hcd [ 1233.643030] usb 4-1: New USB device found, idVendor=067b, idProduct=2303 [ 1233.643051] usb 4-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 [ 1233.643065] usb 4-1: Product: USB-Serial Controller [ 1233.643078] usb 4-1: Manufacturer: Prolific Technology Inc. [ 1233.646376] pl2303 4-1:1.0: pl2303 converter detected [ 1233.658373] usb 4-1: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0 tomb@trb-NC10:~$
I have added my user name to the dialout group.
I don't use the MacBook (OS X) because I've found getting the drivers to work on my WIndows machine was just too hard. With Linux, it's a dream. Plus I like to play with different OS's so I have both Xubuntu and Windows 7 VMs running under VirtualBox on my MacBook. For as rarely as I use CHIRP (2-3 times per year) easy is better. :-)
Thanks for your help.

seems that it is having trouble opening the serial port? Did you logout completely and back in after adding yourself to dialout group. Does "id" command show that you are member of dialout group? What are permissions on /dev/ttyUSB0 (ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0) ?
regarding mac, and chinese cables, not working is very common problem. "fixed" drivers must be used: see the note about driver for fake prolific chipset here: http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/MacOS_Tips
