[chirp_users] Unable to read UV-2501
Just got a new Btech UV-2501 and unable to read from radio. Error message "radio did not enter clone mode". Then the radio restarts? Anticipating a request for logging files, I downloaded the manufacturer's programming software and installed. Whenever I try to read from radio, the radio repeatedly cycles on and off until I shut down the software. Any thoughts? Thanks, John, N5SU
Hey John...are you selecting BTech in the model selection, or Baofeng? Needs to be BTech.

Does this radio have at least as much voice output as the Baofeng UV 5R? I have been looking for reviews on it and I have found no such references, and the YouTube programming video had no voice output, but the guy may have turned that feature off. Thanks. As far as I can tell, this radio doesn't have voice output...not among the menu items that I have found. But something I already find objectionable are the beep tones...extremely loud unless you turn volume lower than desired for monitoring calls.

Yes, Btech selected, then model number. Have also tried, as some have suggested regarding the problem, first placing radio in VFO mode and selecting top line on display...still no joy.

John, I have the UV-5001 and I love it. BUT....it's tricky to program, I think. I just had to re-program it the other day to add/remove some channels...took me 45 minutes. I had to download a driver off the FTDI site like the recommended cable directions said, but it's funny the timing of when I have to plug the cable into my laptop, and then plug into my radio.

OK. Could you elaborate a bit on that timing/sequence of cable connecting?
Thanks

Ok bear with me. I work for one of the Highway Offices here in KY and I'm on the road today....
I ordered one of the recommended cables, suggested either by Miklor or the BaofengTech website. Can't remember. (Just confirmed, was Miklor). For mine he recommended a FTDI cable. After my laptop is turned on and everything...I plug the cable into my laptop and let the drivers (in the cable) load. Gave me an error that didn't load properly. I then had to go to this site (http://www.ftdichip.com) and download a different set of drivers....load those, restart my laptop and make sure the correct ones were being used in my Device Manager (yellow icon showing up in my Coms/Ports area). Then after all that....it was THEN that I plug it into my actual radio. NOT easy.

Yessir! I always know to watch for that yellow icon, changing this for my Baofeng ht's isn't a problem a bit. But doing it for my Uv5001 is a task! But that's what I was instructing John to look for.

You do not want a "yellow icon' showing. This is an indication of a problem with the driver/programming cable.

Yes Jim, and Brent, I've already gone through the yellow flag thing. Loaded the older Prolific drvr to work with my obvious knock-off cable. I may eventually resort to ordering an FTDI cable, not ruling that out. But right now, I have hard time believing the cable is the problem as long as I have a driver that works with it.
I'm thinking the manufacturer has changed the radio firmware slightly as they are prone to do, and once again Chirp will have to be tweaked to match the "magic string". But they will have to wait for others to provide log data since I can't even get my radio to work with the manufacturer's programming software.
I was hoping some of the Chirp developers monitor this forum and will chime in with suggestions.

Thanks Brent. I've had a UV5R for a while and love it, just need something to set on the bench and hook to an outside antenna. So far, I'm please with the performance via manually programming. The learning curve for manual prog was fairly short since it's so similar to the HT. But it's quite tedious compared to using Chirp. May just have to wait a while for a later ver. of chirp.
Thanks again,
John, N5SU

John,
Are you sure you have a working programming cable? We aren't aware of any issues of downloading from the BTECH radios with CHIRP when using Windows. I have none here with my various preproduction, gen1, gen2 and gen3 radios. So there isn't likely to be any changes to future builds that would help you.
Load CHIRP, attempt a download, close CHIRP and grab the debug.log file and attach it here (or email it to me) so we can see what is/isn't happening. The "How to report issues" page on the CHIRP website will show you how to find the debug.log file.
Jim KC9HI
I would try to delete it from device manager, and restart your computer. Windows should find the driver if you have installed it.
