[chirp_users] New to list and a question
Hi list members!
Mike Lubrecht here from Snohomish County, Washington. I've just started using Chirp to attempt to coordinate the programming on some of my small HTs. I successfully programmed my Baofeng UV-5R, and was able to upload from my Yaesu VX-3 (not the "R" model.) Unfortunately, I haven't been able to download anything successfully to the Yaesu unit, after carefully following the sequence to put the radio into clone mode and wait for the download from my computer.
Am I missing anything? I believe my drivers are all up to date. And since I was able to upload from the Yaesu, I'm assuming that the cable and drivers were working. Any hints would be greatly appreciated. My hope is to clone the Baofeng and Yaesu, using appropriate inport/export (or just cutting and pasting parameters between .img files).
Thanks!
Mike

I think you're using download/upload opposite to the way Chirp uses it. This is likely to confuse some people. Chirp uses "Download from Radio" and "Upload to Radio".

Before you initiate the upload in Chirp, does the VX3 display say " --WAIT-- "? That what it shows when it's ready to accept programming.
The Yaesus and their clone mode really are a pain to program compared to any other programmable radio.

Thanks for answering, Tom. You're right - I did have the sense of direction reversed in my text below.
To answer your question - yep, the VX is in -- wait -- mode when I click the OK button to start sending data. Then there's the cloning progress bar, the radio goes back to normal mode, but nothing was uploaded to the radio.

You're description about downloading doesn't make sense.
A download is the software pulling data from the VX3. An upload would be taking the downloaded "template" from the VX3 download, making modifications, then uploading that template or "img file" back into the VX3.
With that in mind could you make perfectly clear as to what part of the process you are having a problem with?
Uploading data TO the VX3 or Downloading the data FROM the VX3. The Chirp software is really as unintimidating as can be so just chill out and things should become more apparent. Someone here on the list can always help you work the kinks out where they be a software or hardware issue or you just not understanding the three basic steps of communications with your radio and PC.
Milton.

Sorry about the confusion – I did have my sense of direction reversed.
I can “download from Radio” just fine – getting a template of what’s programmed in the radio. That part seems to work fine.
If I modify that template, either by manually adding a channel or by cutting/pasting from my Baofeng template, it doesn’t “upload to radio” successfully. I did follow the described sequence exactly, setting the radio clone mode, and waiting until I got the “wait” prompt to upload the modified file. Chirp gives the appearance of uploading the file, but the new data never appears.

Hi, Mike; I'm over by Lake Stevens.
What repeaters do you hang out on? Let me know off list if you're interested in any other Chirp files.

I've recently become re-interested in HAM, primarily for the emergency response and backwoods survival aspects. I live in Monroe, work at home, and frequently monitor the Pilchuck 2m repeater, as well as Tiger Mountain.
