[chirp_users] Current mac computer, older Wouxun and bad cable
I use Apple Mac computers with the latest OS - 10.13 High Sierra. I bought a used Wouxun KG-UV3D with old programming cable. Needless to say, this combination doesn’t work. I think I have 2 problems:
1) the HT doesn’t communicate with the computer, and 2) the most current CHIRP software doesn’t appear to cover the KG-UV3D, though I could be wrong.
RE: #! — I have seen on youtube that many times the older programming cables need to be updated. Can any Mac users suggest the proper cable for my MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012) running OSX 10.13.3 ?
RE: #2 — Should I use an older/ earlier release of the CHIRP software? If so, can you help me to access it?
Thank you for your attention!
John
Hi John,
I use a Mac to set-up my radios with CHIRP as well (Macbook Air 10.13.3). Mac’s do not need any additional drivers IF you use cables with genuine FTDI serial chips. I happen to use cables sold by Mark Dunkle, KJ6ZWL. He sells them on eBay and Amazon under the name "BlueMax49ers”. I’m not connected to his company except that I’ve been a very satisfied customer. There are doubtless others producing and selling real FTDI cables.
There is a However...Some of the recent inexpensive import radio manufacturers change firmware in their units without warning. The guys handling development at CHIRP are challenged to keep up with the changes. I’ve had several Baofeng radios (UV-6) that were fully compatible with CHIRP, then suddenly, the next order of the same model started kicking errors when attempting to download their config. YMMV.
Newer versions of CHIRP generally add support for newer model radios, but still support the same list of previous radios, sometimes with bug-fixes.
good luck,

I use an old programming cable with CHIRP and a 3D, among other radios. No problems, although I'm not using a Mac. No trouble with the CHIRP/3D combination in any case.
