Hi, I thought I had done this before in Windows, because I put a lot of memories into my H3 before. So I needed to edit a few fields, and I downloaded from my radio, and exported that to CSV. Then I edited my fields in Open Office Calc and saved that. Then I selected everything in there, and copied it. Then I went to the Chirp that I downloaded and selected all and deleted it, and pasted into the Chirp window, and only Memory #1 will go into the Chirp. I tried a new window in chirp to paste into there, and still, only one line is going in. What am I doing wrong? I hate that we cannot import a CSV any more, like we used to do. Thanks for any help.

Hi Glenn,
You can only paste 1 memory row at a time in the CHIRP spreadsheet style user interface. If you want to bring in data for more than one memory row at a time, then you need to import a properly formatted (CHIRP compatible) CSV file.

Hi Jim, I thought so too, that is why I first downloaded from the radio, and then exported to CSV, and then opened that CSV and edited a couple fields, saved it, and selected all, and tried to paste it back into chirp. You can't copy and paste from the csv file into CHIRP. You have to IMPORT the csv file into CHIRP using the IMPORT function.
PS - Why didn't you just make the changes within CHIRP instead of messing with a csv file?

This is Fake News. Please do not make such unfounded assertions. That sort of behavior _is_ unwelcome on this list, much like claiming CSV files don't work with CHIRP.
When I import, Chirp says invalid file type.
Many of us deal with CSV files in CHIRP _all_the_time_. The problem with editing CSV files in an external application is that CSV is an encoding *not* a file format and things like spreadsheets will happily change the formatting in a way that makes the files no longer compatible with CHIRP.
Please file a bug, attach the file in question and I will tell you if it's a CHIRP bug (in which case I will fix it) or how you've broken the format so maybe you can avoid it.

You put in filters, so if I use B l i n d or s c r e e n r e a d e r the messages will not make it to the list. The truth is, Chirp does not read the fields with a SR so that is not fake. Anyone can run J A W S and try it with Chirp and without the use of a mouse, and they will get nowhere. Yet, I can open any database program and use it with my SR. I have access to three different SRs. If people cared about a c c e s s i b i l i t y, they would test Chirp with a SR.

This is the Fake News, and it will be your last time asserting it on the infrastructure I pay for you to use for free. I've been trying to get you to file a bug so I can spend my evening examining your file and explaining how you've broken the format so you can fix it. But you just want to complain. While waiting for you to do that so I can help you, I've also spent my dinner time implementing a best-effort function to try to parse out the format that LibreOffice/OpenOffice puts on the clipboard to let you copy/paste multiple memories from that application directly into chirp. Just for you. That change will be in tomorrow's build, and yet while writing and debugging that, I'm fielding accusations and complaints from you on this list. Sometimes I feel like a masochist.

As I have said many times before, this is a _fundamental_ lack of support in the windowing toolkit that CHIRP uses to be cross-platform. It is not something CHIRP can or will address. You may feel free to complain to WxWidgets about this. I'm sorry it doesn't work with a screenreader like JAWS for better accessibility, but you should feel free to learn how to fix the underlying issue, or of course, use another tool.
Complaining about WxWidgets not supporting screenreaders for the Grid widget is officially offtopic for this list. I really hate "code of conduct" documents, but we clearly need one for this list. I'll work on that, because clearly this decade-old FAQ entry is not enough:

I use Linux based LIbre Office/Open Office/Chirp all the time. C&P/Import/Export. No issues. One thing if in Linux I have found using Paste from the menu selection in a number of programs ges around the CTRL-V issues.
I continually use Libre Calc with the exported file all the time because I can control the column selections/widths and print formating better than in Chirp. Chirp has always printed in "barly can see ink saver mode" for me. Nothing to get one's panties in a twist over.

Hi, Yeah, I didn't mention it before, but I tried both control V and entering on "paste" in the edit menu with the same results. I exported to Open Office, I could try Libra Office to see if that works better. I had been told years ago that Excel wants to remove commas from Chirp exports. This means your spreadsheet is not using the comma character as the separating value (or is trying to do fixed-width columns) and is definitely not going to work. When I open a CHIRP CSV file in LibreOffice it just does the right thing, so I'm not sure why yours doesn't. However, on the prompt you get about how to interpret the text data, you should select "comma" and de-select "tab", "semicolon", or any others. Set "string delimiter" to the double-quote character. As others have mentioned, I can open CHIRP CSV files in LibreOffice, make changes, save (as CSV) and open/import into CHIRP without any drama. The caveat there is, of course, that the edits you make have to be exact and not break the format, otherwise CHIRP has no way of reading your mind to determine what you *meant*.
Also, you've been saying "OpenOffice" but I hope you're not actually using that and are using it as a general term. The actual OpenOffice has been abandonware for ten years at this point and LibreOffice is its successor. I dunno what its defaults are, or what it looks like when it tries to import text data. If you're looking for help from people, you should probably be using the stuff from this decade.

I thought I had done this before in Windows, because I put a lot of memories into my H3 before.
No, this has never been a thing. I'm sure it sounds trivial but copy and paste of structured data between applications is not a universal thing. LibreOffice converts the columns into tab-separated fields without any quoting, strips leading zeroes and omits some empty fields. Other applications may do different things, mangle the format in various other ways, and of course, behave differently on other platforms.
What am I doing wrong?
You're trying to do something that has never worked.
I hate that we cannot import a CSV any more, like we used to do.
If you're having trouble importing or opening CSV files then file a bug with a debug log.
File->Import from file works from CSV (or any other file type CHIRP supports). If you want to replace your entire contents of memory with the CSV file, then this will do what you want. It's never (ever) what I want, so I would recommend anyone else just open the edited CSV file in CHIRP and copy/paste (within CHIRP) the memories you want from the updated file.
--Dan

I have never gotten chirp to import a CSV since after flatpack days. But this is in windows where it also, prior to python3, worked with CSV files.
