However, shortly afterwards, that display goes away, and Chirp complains that it didn't get as much data as it expected.

Any suggestions? Do I have the wrong cable, something else?

Because of the socket well of the radios using this style of case, it is common for the strain relief area of the plug to contact the side of the case before the plug is fully inserted into the socket. Due to the large variations in the cables, a few of the plugs clear the case just fine. Some only have a slight bit of interference such that the user can press hard on the plug into the socket to overcome the interference. Some plugs have so much interference that more extreme steps have to be taken to overcome the interference. Some have whittled away part of the plug's shell and or strain relief to eliminate the interference. What I have done is purchase short extension cables with straight plugs that eliminate the issue without having to perform any surgery.
