[chirp_users] Duplex "off" option
For the Baofeng UV-5R and variants....when programming a simplex frequency channel.. will setting the Duplex option in CHIRP to "Off" result in suppressing the TX in simplex operations?
The reason for asking is as follows: I have several police and fire freqs programmed into my radios, i.e., simplex. I want to make sure that even if I make a mistake and hit the TX key, I will not TX on these freqs.
I have in the past programmed these memory channels using split mode and setting the TX on a dummy freq well away from the agency RX/TX freq.
Thanks for any help !!

Duplex = (None) = simplex Duplex = off = RX only/no TX

Simple test press the tx an see if your red indicator light come on (if not it is not broadcasting) but I have noticed in some cases (if before you set it to off) it was at + or -, it will not reset to that same + or -, it will go to o in some repeater cases that need that + or - setting an the off set factor.

I have the Baofeng 82-hp. After reading the conversation below, I set my radio on a local police frequency that is programed with “Duplex” set to None and tested it to make sure I wouldn’t transmit on it. I pressed the transmit button and the red light on top came on and the transmit indicator on the screen showed it was transmitting. From what I have read that means it is transmitting. Wouldn’t the radio transmit if I only selected “split”?

Read the Duplex and Offset sections at: http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/MemoryEditorColumns
On Baofeng radios if you have Duplex set to anything besides OFF the radio WILL TRANSMIT.
Tom ND5Y
Duplex None = Tx / Rx on the same freq = Simplex Duplex Split = Tx / Rx on split freq = Repeater Duplex Off = Rx only = No Transmit

In my configuration for a BaoFeng F8-HP there are 5 values for the Duplex setting (None, -, +, Split, Off)
I believe + and - are variations of split.

Add a global setting for license type. And, set duplex to off for frequencies outside the bands allowed to TX by the license. I know it's not quite as simple as it seems because of international differences. So, you would probably need to add a country setting, too.

This gets especially complicated in the US where, for most amateur bands, certain modes are only allowed on certain frequencies.
Personally, I use Chirp to program a number of Part 90 radios in Chirp. Teaching Chirp about all the licenses and FUAs for each agency I work with sounds like more trouble than it's worth. There would need be an override.

I hadn't thought about mode.
A partial solution ignoring mode would be useful to prevent accidental tx on weather radio channels, etc.
A well designed wiki like interface would enable the hard details to be crowd sourced.
I'm not sure it's worth the trouble, either. And it still may be more difficult than I realize. But maybe it should be added to the official list of things to consider someday in the future.
I agree on the override

The point is to make it easier for licensed folks to avoid mistakes that violate the law, not to make it impossible for folks who intend to violate the law.
It's easy to accidentally press the TX button. I would prefer to easily configure the radio to limit the damages. Duplex off is nice. But, I'd prefer to set my country to US and license to Amateur Technician and automatically have Duplex set correctly for all frequencies outside the amateur bands.
Crowdsourcing database tables is relatively straightforward with MediaWiki. There may be other wikis that are easier to use and do a good job crowdsourcing tables.

What is MediaWiki?

MediaWiki is the very powerful wiki software that runs the Wikipedia and many other well-known wikis. It is not the easiest to work with, but it can do just about anything wiki related, and do it well. Casual users are frequently overwhelmed by its complexity. So, it is often not the best choice.
There may be other wiki software that handles database tables for crowdsourcing well without being too complex for most users.

And then the problen that the "duplex off" trick doesn't work with most radios anyhow. I usually ser the offset so that the TX falls in a little used part of an amateur band.

If "duplex off" doesn't work on most radios, it is not worth the trouble automatically set it appropriately.

If "duplex off" doesn't work on a radio, it is a bug and should be reported. The selection should only appear on radio models that it works on. Otherwise, something will think they've disabled TX when it isn't.

I hadnt noticed OFF.
i just tried that on my 3tpiii and confirm tx is BLOCKED. nothing happens when you key up. Great :-)
time to change a few more memorys lol......

If you use combinations of click, shift-click and control-click to highlight all of the memory rows that you want to TX disabled and click the [Properties] button at the top of the memory editor (or right-click one of the hightlighted memory rows and choose "Properties" in the menu that appears), then you can set Duplex to "off" on all of those memory rows at the same time.

o good and then o dear.....
just tried that, was hoping as i read your reply to be able to alter a group of power levels like this too, but the general tab and other tabs, the contents are greyed out. cant change state of anything here.

You have to tick the box to the left of the setting(s) that you want to change to enable editing of that setting.

In my configuration for a BaoFeng F8-HP there are 5 values for the Duplex setting (None, -, +, Split, Off)
I believe + and - are variations of split.
When the Duplex column is set to "+" or "-", the Offset column should contain the difference (aka offset) between the RX frequency and the TX frequency. For most 2 meter ham repeaters, this value is 0.60000 MHz. For most 1.25 meter ham repeaters this is 1.60000 MHz. For most 70 centimeter ham repeaters, this value is 5.00000 MHz.
When the Duplex column is set to "split", the Offset column should contain the actual TX frequency. This is necessary when you are inputting a cross band frequency pair. It is also useful when you are given the frequency pair of a repeater and don't want to do the math to calculate the "offset" (difference between the 2 frequencies).
