[chirp_users] Looking for assistance
Last summer while in China I purchased a Baofeng UV-5R. I found it difficult to program by the keypad, so I later purchased a programming cable and have installed Chirp in an effort to program the radio.
I have followed the "Basic Procedure for Programming" from the Chirp Beginner's Guide Wiki. But I get the following error message when trying to "Download from radio":
"Radio refused to send block 0x0140"
The block address doesn't come up the same every time. I also had these values from a handful of other attempts: (0x0300, 0x0380, 0x0280, 0x0240). The Cloning process does not complete.
I am using CHIRP daily-20170603 within Xubuntu 17.04
UV-5R firmware version is: 297 (according to screen info when pressing "3" and turning radio on)
USB cable seems to have this USB/serial converter: Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port
I am new to VHF/UHF operation and HT operation in general. Not completely new to Linux. Have only one cable and one rig. Here in rural Taiwan at the moment, I don't know anyone else who owns a UV-5R, so I can't test the cable or radio against other units.
I did read the FAQ and lots of other info, but nothing I saw there seemed to address my issue.
Sincerely yours,
BX8AAD
One known problem with the UV-5R is that the socket for the programming cable is recessed and sometimes the plug is too large to seat properly. This can lead to intermittent or constant communications failures. Several solutions have been suggested and tried and found useful:
1. Press the plug really firmly into the socket and hold it there during the programming attempt. This worked for me. 2. Examine the front of the plug and, if required, cut some of the plastic away on a bevel to make the plug face narrower. I have not done this personally but I have heard of it being done with some success.
Best of luck, Chris KC9AD

Chris,
Thanks for your response. I made sure the plug was fully inserted and put pressure on it throughout the process. I also looked at the plug, and it is metal all the way to the base - no plastic is getting in the way. Unfortunately the suggestions you gave, as good as they are, did not solve this particular problem.

A couple of ideas: I usually make sure the cable is plugged in to the computer before booting up, this may make no difference, but I do it to ensure that the driver gets loaded. Also, it has been noted that you should have the volume up all the way. And finally, are you confident that the battery is fully charged and that the radio is not on any channels with traffic? Hope one thing might help. Glenn

Glenn,
Thanks for your ideas. The dmesg command indicates that the USB/serial driver does get identified and loaded.
Volume all the way up, battery is fully charged, and on a channel with no traffic.
But every idea helps.
Thanks,

The driver level is an issue on Windows (probably the most common one people run into). But not on Linux, which I see you're using.

If you are using Windows, goto device manager, ports. If the cable used is shown to be a Prolific cable, goto www.miklor.com and track down the driver 3.2.0.0. Follow the directions on the web site. A lot of Prolific cables have fake Chinese chips in them, and the latest and newer drivers will not work on them. Changing to 3.2.0.0 will work.

Jardy, I don't know what it means to "driver back" to 3.2.0.0. Can you help me out with that?

Chris,
Thanks for your response. I made sure the plug was fully inserted and put pressure on it throughout the process. I also looked at the plug, and it is metal all the way to the base - no plastic is getting in the way. Unfortunately the suggestions you gave, as good as they are, did not solve this particular problem.

This can lead to intermittent or constant communications failures. Several solutions have been suggested and tried and found useful:
- Press the plug really firmly into the socket and hold it there during the
programming attempt. This worked for me. 2. Examine the front of the plug and, if required, cut some of the plastic away on a bevel to make the plug face narrower. I have not done this personally but I have heard of it being done with some success. Why would he need to do that when he's NOT using Windows?

I have been using this cable for some time, with no problems. Windows 10 Pro x64. Baofeng UV-5RTP, among others.

I'm at the point now where I have tried all the suggestions to no avail. I suppose I have to assume a faulty radio or cable, not operator error or wrong settings. I will have to wait until I can take the radio back to the US with me next summer when I can have others take a look at it. Thanks to all who made suggestions.
