[chirp_users] Recommendations on "under $400.00" hand-held
Hello Friends,
I am using an 8 year old radio, Wouxun KG-UV3D. It’s worked well for my limited use. I’m looking to get a new hand-held radio under $400. Any suggestions on radios not made in China? Suggestions on Chinese radios?
Thanks for your expertise!
Deuce
HF. VHF, UHF? FM, SSB, CW? Power output? Suitable for the blind? You're a bit vague.

Get a Baofeng UV-XR. It's handheld, has a 10-watt - 5watt - 1watt power range, a 4800 maH battery, and can be had for around $50. I've had mine ever since I got my Amateur Extra license (October 2018) and it has never given me a lick of trouble. In addition to the antenna that comes with it, I use a mobile antenna mounted on the housing of my air conditioner in the window of my 2nd floor master bedroom and a Ringo Ranger just inside the same window. I can switch between the two with a switch mounted on my drafting table where I sit when I'm on the radio.

The Baofeng UV-82HP is a great 8 watt handheld. The extra power gives it additional range, especially with a better antenna.

Deuce,
If it works well, keep using it, invest in something else, even DRM or some HF radio.
The unit you have is just as good as others, unless you work in Emergency Comms where it will overload with nearby signals and possibly you will miss a critical broadcast, but that doesn't apply to 99% of us.
Buy a yagi and all mode radio, SSB/CW/AM is much different than FM, and I bet you'd love it.
I have radios that are 30 years old and do everything I need so I keep them.
The radios that don't do what I need, I replace with ones that do what I need.
Just an observation.

$400 for an HT these days will buy you a lot of radio. As such, you need to give us more criteria to help guide you:
- Are you only looking for an analog FM radio or something that supports digital modes?
- If also digital modes, would you want DMR, Yaesu System Fusion, D-star, P25, etc?
- If just analog FM, would you want just one VFO or two real VFOs (dual watch)
- Would you want full duplex support?
- Would you want wide band receive of say HF, SHF, etc? Maybe RX of other modes like USB, LSB, CW, etc?
- Would you want APRS on this HT?
- What about say Bluetooth audio?
- Is programming via Chirp a requirement? If not, is computer based programming a requirement? If so, what OS? WIndows, Mac, Linux?
I can keep going here but I think you get the point.
