[chirp_users] ic-2100, Icom USB OPC-478 FTDI (Valley Enterprises), driver from ftdichip.com and Windows XP
I have an ic-2100, Icom USB OPC-478 FTDI (Valley Enterprises), driver from ftdichip.com and Windows XP setup. The usb serial port is on com 5 (I checked in device manager). With the ic 1200 in the clone mode, asking chirp to download from the radio, clicking OK and pushing the smwmw button on the radio, I get “An error has occurred. Failed to communicate with the radio unexpected response from radio”. I even tried without putting the radio in the clone mode......same response.....also tried two other computers (one XP and one Windows 7). When I ask the program to detect the radio I get....”An error has occurred. Unable to get radio model.” Am I missing a step or two or doing things wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jean A similar thing happened to me on a different radio. I got it going by first downloading a stock img file from within the program, then altering it, then sending it back to the radio. Hope that helps....

Hi John,
I tried your suggestion and it didn’t work for me. “Upload to radio” is greyed out. Also tried “alt+u” and that doesn’t work either. It seems that the program is not recognizing the radio for some reason. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program, reinstalled the driver and still no luck. Have also tried it on three different computers.

You have to download from the radio into CHIRP first… This seems to be the case for most programs that I have used. It opens communications… Chirp will create a TAB in the program with the current program list. Then you can copy paste from your list on the other tab… then upload to radio…

Icom radios are smart. Simply power them on (not in clone mode), connect the cable, and tell chirp to download it. If you try to initiate a clone from the radio, you'll break the communication process.
Have tried the "non-clone" mode before and again now. Still does't work.

Then it's time to follow the instructions on the website for filing a bug and providing the debug log. However, I know several people that use the IC2100 regularly with CHIRP, so I'd check the rest of your cabling, settings, drivers, etc just to be sure :)
I have an IC2100, will get a cable and see how CHIRP works for me on it, it will be a couple of weeks radjio is at Birch Bay, WA, and I won't be back up there for a while. CHIRP works perfrectly for me for my Baofeng UV-5R and Wouxon 699E, same cable. When people say "it is not recognizing the radio," what that most likely really means is that there is an issue with the USB to serial adapter software. Other than that, if the cable is not defective, the USB to serial adapter software is about all that could possibly be not correct. Either that or maybe doing things in the wrong sequence or wrong manner (for example trying to control the process from the radio instead of letting CHIRP control the process).

I think there is more too it than that. I've had periodic problems programming radios with both Chirp and the Wouxun software using the same cable and the same radio. The exact same sequence of steps yields different results. Sometimes it works flawlessly, sometimes you have to dance a jig on your left foot while holding your tongue with your right thumb and forefinger while mentally reciting a voodoo incantation. Ultimately, I just reboot the box and start from scratch and all is well. I suspect that there are driver issues where the driver may be left in an unstable state which is sometimes recoverable, sometimes not, especially if a previous programming attempt was performed in the wrong sequence.

Jim,
I have found the 2 most common issues with the drivers to be:
2 devices trying to use the same com port or changing the cable to a different USB position where a New driver was loaded.
Just a thought.

John,
I'm certain that those actions would cause problems. However in my case everything is pretty much static. I have a single dedicated port on the hub on my iMac and always use the front panel port on my Windows box. I've found no indications of port conflict.
What I have found is that if you do things perfectly every time, it works flawlessly. But if, for example, you forget to turn off the radio before plugging in the programming cable and try to download from it, things are get hosed up and may, or may not, recover without a reboot. I've found this to be the case both with multiple programming sessions on the same radio, or when programming a batch of radios, and with both the Wouxun KG-UV6X and the Baofeng UV-5R. The problem is most pronounced on the Windows box, but does sometimes happen on the Mac box.
