[chirp_users] Yaesu VX-5r Uploading Issue
Can anyone help? I keep getting a “Clone Error” message on my HT’s screen about three quarters of the way through the upload to the radio. I won’t list everything I’ve done because I have no issues uploading to my FT-8900R. The cable I am using is made by Valley Industries, as is my other radio’s cable. The driver has been downloaded for MacOSX, the Python software is installed, and the radio’s battery is fully charged.
I’ve additionally gone through the settings of each column to verify that there isn’t a memory that has an unacceptable input, such as an out-of-range Tune Step. I’m confused presently.

While cloning is your radio tuned to a frequency that has no traffic?

Initially, the first attempt I don’t remember. However, the partial uploads leave the radio as if it were new, i.e. all the previous programed channels/frequencies are gone, and all the customizations, such as digit size on the screen, signal strength progressive bar icon type, etc. have all changed to default.
Currently, when turned on, the radio is defaulted to 144.000MHz. The squelch is set relatively low as static with no traffic is heard.

I tried tuning to a higher frequency in the band, one with not so much noise, that didn’t break squelch. Attempted to re-upload, and the same condition happened. I also tried depressing the corresponding receive button at just the same time as initiating the upload in Chirp. Again, same condition. And, I’ve also tried the upload process on a charged battery, and again while charging. Same condition.
In every scenario, the radio changes from CLONE RX to CLONE ERROR; however, Chirp’s upload progress bar finishes, and then the progress window disappears as if the process was successful… no error warning. It was seem as if Chirp doesn’t know that the process has stopped, and yet the radio does know the process was interupted.
I have another Valley Enterprise cable for another Yaesu, and have never experienced an issue… using this same computer, software, and associated drivers. I have re-confirmed that the cable is the correct one for this radio. The VX-5R otherwise works well, with little use in its lifetime. The jack where the cable inserts is tight, and the cable inserts completely. The microphone that uses the same jack works completely when inserted.
What I would like to determine is if this is a problem stemming from the radio (hardware or firmware), the applicationChirp (software), the mac (hardware, firmware or driver), or the cable (hardware). Is anyone else able to upload to their VX-5R? If so, then it most likely isn’t an application issue.

Would you mind explaining the hardware you are using that produces the same results? Mac, Windows, or Linux (and which distribution)? What brand/model cable are you using?
I downloaded, and booted from the Lunux Live CD version of Chirp, which uses the Xfce 4.8 OS. At this point, I just wanted to complete an upload and download cycle as a test. The upload cycle completed, creating an image file for the VX-5R. However, the same exact results were experienced upon attempting a download cycle (radio as the destination). Using common sense, I would think I can rule out the Mac OS architecture as well as the computer itself as the Linux distort is the sole OS, and using the mac as the hardware only, just as if I ran the live CD from any other supported hardware.
The computer I’m using is a 2010 MacBook Pro: OS X 10.11.2, 2.4GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, and a SSD for storage. I have yet to try this on my business Mac Pro as I won’t be using it for both radios as it isn’t in my shack, hence it would defeat the purpose of problem-solving the computer for which would be.
So, without any other feedback or ideas, I’m leaning towards focusing on the radio, the cable or perhaps Chirp itself.

Just to make sure we're clear, Chirp uses the opposite definitions of upload and download. In Chirp, the first step is to click "Download from Radio." Then modify your channels. Then "Upload to Radio."
Has your radio ever been modified for out of band transmit? Is the image you're trying to upload from another VX5 that was modded? A mismatch of region bits is one thing that causes a clone error.
A little background: Yaesu uses an extremely primitive programming protocol. It simply sends all the bytes and hopes for the best. This is why there is no error reported in Chirp--there's no mechanism in the protocol for receiving an error report from the radio. The only error handling opportunity is to watch the radio's display and manually retry if needed.
As far as tweaking Chirp's code to resolve this, the only real opportunity there is to add some extra time between bytes.

I am actually having the same issue ( pc version) I can download from radio no issue, but then editing , and save file ( only as csv file). but no time does it ever let me select the upload to radio option, as it is grayed out

Try the VX-5 Commander software at www.kc8unj.com. It is free like CHIRP, although both take donations. His programs are very good. If one way does not work, he might have an 'alternate write' method, as he does for some other Yaesu products. He covers several Yaesu handhelds and some Wouxun, also.

Dave,
You cannot load a CSV file into CHIRP and upload it to any radio. CHIRP doesn't know what radio it is for.
You have to download from the radio to create a "tab" that is compatible with the radio. An alternative would be to load a CHIRP Radio Images (*.img) file that was saved from the radio. Only this way will you be able to upload the tab to the radio.
What you have to do is "import" the CSV file into this tab. Then upload it.
Jim KC9HI
Thank you all for the feedback and replies. Knowing that I’m not the only one with the issue is somewhat comforting in it’s own way. Fortunately, I can run Windows 7 or 8 via Parallels in my Mac, which might lend itself to another software that might be PC-only based. As for the upload/download terminology… I did upload/download from the radio to Chirp first, which gave me the initial and original .img file in Chirp. Then, upon modifying, I attempted to download/upload from Chirp back to the radio. That is where I discovered this issue. Also, Tom, thank you for explaining Yeasu’s antiquated or inferior method of data transfer. One thing I haven’t tried is to connect the cable to the radio first, then to the Mac. Maybe this doesn’t make a difference, maybe it will. I’ve always connected the cable to the Mac first, then to the radio.
In all, programming the VX-5R isn’t that important. I’m very thankful of the developers for the ability to successfully use Chirp on my FT-8900r. I use that as my base station FM radio, which has a lot of repeaters and simplex frequencies on it.

That reminds me, the connector on the VX5 does not always seat reliably. (Same with the FT-60.) If you put some lateral pressure on it you'll get more consistent results. Maybe no clone error.

After you read from the radio, can you upload it directly back to the radio?
After you load a saved image file, what does CHIRP detect it as (it will say in the tab)?

What? You can download from the radio and export the tab a CSV file but you can save the tab as a native CHIRP image file? I'm sorry, but that's hard to believe. Anyway, with out the CHIRP *.img file, there's not much anyone can do to help you.

I can only offer you the exported csv, because that's is all it will allow...

What? You can download from the radio and export the tab a CSV file but you can save the tab as a native CHIRP image file? I'm sorry, but that's hard to believe. Anyway, with out the CHIRP *.img file, there's not much anyone can do to help you.

Dave, It is great to see that you found a solution. Jim

Yikes. I'm old enough to remember the Xmodem protocol. Thanks for the (not entirely positive) flashback.
